Photographer's Note

A second type of incense burner stand, found buried in the ruins of Temple XVI, relates to dynastic ancestors who are venerated by their descendants. It was believed that ancestors continued to work for the benefit of the community, even while dead and in the underworld. Occasionally these stands served as simple portraits. Who and when of this instance is not known.

This photograph was taken at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau, Quebec.
