Photographer’s Note
The Sanctuary dedicated to ‘Madonna delle lacrime’ in Syracuse, Sicily, is a monumental structure of reinforced concrete. It was designed by M. Audrault and P. Parat of Paris and built by R. Morandi of Rome. This Sanctuary was inaugurated in Aug 1968.
The conical dome is 74m high and built on a base of 80m diameter and weighs some 2.2 million kg ! Internally, the Sanctuary can accomodate a congregation of 11,000 persons.
Re picture, I have tried to capture the pleasant eye-catching converging geometric design of the 22 reinforced concrete beams sustaining the cupola.
