Photographer’s Note

Piazza San Marco in Siena is famous for how it is divided into sector of which each part of the town has one. The sectors are separated by narrow grey bands in the stone pavement that form a fan pattern over the half-circle that the square forms. The whole square has a tilt like an amphi theater. This was probably good for communicating to the masses but on the other hand the whole town is built on a hilltop.

But the civil engineer in me saw something else on this pavement. The sectors have a nice camber between the grey lines. This means that rainwater will run from the brick colored sectors to the grey lines and follow these downhill. In the middle of the base diagonal of the half-circle all these lines, and all the rainwater, meets in a central sewer inlet in this well like contraption.

The girl taking a picture of the sewer inlet is probably a fellow civil engineer, that is the only way to explain her interest in the sewer. Or maybe just another crazy TE-member?

Colorwise your image is pleasant, and even your models (the girl and the pigeon) match with the setting. Her clothes match the bricks, the pigeon´s feathers with the gray lines.
´the guard rail is very charming, full of geometric details ;)
