I always thought that was why they held them forward, though it does seem to be a good way of identifying the sympetrum family , which is a good start when trying to name an unknown dragonfly

Not much choice with this one, the wing ends are in the same plane as the grass, it is perched in a small hollow in the grass so it was like a wall and these darters seem to hold their wings forward....

A quick thank you, if I translate you correctly the branch that is comming forward you feel is a problem, I was unable to crop it out because of the way the bottom leg stuck down to the same level....
