Uploading photos

Apologies for asking, but can't find answer anywhere on site! Am trying to upload my first photo having just joined TE and as my photos are all above 1MB they are being rejected. I can't find any advice on how to get around this. I understand they need to be JPEG files, and have no idea how to resolve this. Any help greatly appreciated.

Not a stupid question.
Photos for TE need to be re-sized 2 ways.
1. By dimension, so as not to be more than 800 pixels across
2. By file size, so as not to be more than 300 kb

How do you do this? It can be done in most popular image editing programs - but I don't know if you have one of these. So, try typing "photo resizing programe" into google and you'll (almost certainly) be able to obtain some simple freeware to get your photos to the required size.
