Many thanks for your comments on this one. I'm never quite sure if I like it myself!
Time of day? I can't be too sure. But I think it's probably mid-morning, maybe 10.00 a.m. The "look" is more reflective of the fact that everything in this shot is a fair distance away. A shot with foreground, taken at the same time, would - indeed does - exhibit the uniform flat light of a cloudy day. Not so interesting. But things were changing fast, and the afternoon hike was undertaken in brilliant sunshine under solid blue.
