Hello Christine,
It's a nice portrait, but even if this girl was considered too old to go to school, to my mind she looks far too young to leave school. She couldn't possibly have had enough education to help her to a better life.
Regards,
Gert

Default To holmertz: going to school

yes Gert I agree with you; school is the way to have a better life... and this girl is very young....
but here we are in a rural village and no real work for girls if they want to stay... she cann work in fields and what is the life for girl she'll have children and be a lovely mother. at school teenage girls learn sewing ; but there is little professional future for them in the village.... their future is marriage and raising their family..... (not my vision for the girl's life)
the boys have more opportunities to work, particularly with forestry; the company provides them a house and there is a purchasing cooperative that helps a lot. families often cultivate a piece of land for their own consumption.
otherwise "the future" of young people is to go to town....
