Default Advice about camera please

I plan on taking a trip to Thailand later this year and am wanting to capture it the best I can with a decent camera. My question is what digital camera would you reccomend for me to buy. I know basics about photography but think I have a good eye for photos. I am limited to about $300 US so if you know of any good digital cameras with a good zoom please let me know. Thanx

Dear John, welcome to TE.
Best advice about that can be given at the www.dpreview.com forum.

Otherwise I would suggest the Kodak DX6490

Yours, Jan

I'd start by spending some time on http://www.imaging-resource.com/WB/WB.HTM. This will give you a list of cameras that will perhaps meet your needs.

If you just want a quick answer I'd look at the Canon A75 and A80. Both are good basic cameras with automatic and manual controls.

Remember that if you want to print large you need to buy the pixels to do the job. If you just want album prints, web work and decent prints up to ~8"x12" even a two meg camera will do the job. Almost all of the images that I've posted on this site are from a two meg camera. And I've made some quite nice 8"x12" prints when the subject didn't have a lot of important fine detail.

Hi John,

I would recommend http://www.dcresource.com. Click on Reviews/Info. Once you pick a camera out of the list (the list shows zoom, price, model, etc.), on the page that comes up, click on DCRP Review. This guy does awesome reviews. Hope this helps.

Regards,
Stephen

If you are willing to take a little risk, there are some places where you can buy excellent used camera's. You might take a look at Houston Camera Exchange to get an idea of what is available used. Like used cars, you might might just find a high end camera for a low end price that way.

Have a look at my FAQ there's a section about choosing a digital camera, and some links to shortlist generators and the like :-)
