Great yeti1975 2008-03-25 6:41

Hi Paul,

Excellent night photography. You got the North Star nicely in the frame.

Can you please post the original unprocessed file in the workshop. I have never tried long exposure with my digital camera. I have been using film all this time. The noise level is very less on film. I will be taking long exposures during my forthcoming expedition so I just want to get an idea of the image quality on digital. If it is not too god then i will have to take my film body and lens just for night photography.

Thanks

Rajib

No north star, wrong hemisphere for that I'm afraid ;-). I took this photo looking south. I will post the original tonight after work.
Thanks for your visit and kind words.
Cheer, Paul.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting the original image. I use a software called Noise Ninja. I use the photoshop plugin. It has a lot lesser parameters than Neat Image and does a good job.

BTW how much power did the camera drain for an exposure of 10 minutes? Power is a big headache for me in the mountains, I have no chance to recharge my batteries and I have to carry enough power for 45 days for my expedition this year! I will be using 2 bodies, Nikon D200 and a D300. I have a battery power pack for the D200 so I can use AA cells. I will be carrying 8 Li- Ion cells and 30 pairs of AA cells. The D200 requires 6 AA cells at a time.

Hi Rajib. As for battery power, not too sure how much I drained, I can only suggest you do some experimenting before you go.
If I were going and knew I would be doing “lots” of long exposures I might be tempted to take a film camera as well. Good luck with your expedition.
Cheers, Paul.
