Great macjake 2020-07-06 6:51

Hi Kari
wow, looking at the MAP feature, I didn't realize how close St. Petersburgh and Stockholm are to Helsinki. I would be very easy to go to all three cities in one trip. How long are the usual ferry rides from Helsinki to those two cities?
I'd love to visit this place as well, the subject content is fantastic, so unique, so photogenic. great pics for TE
cheers
Craig

Default To macjake: welcomed

Interesting question - were we welcomed? Well kind of, I'd describe it more as being tolerated. It is necessary to hire a "guide" in order to go into the village. He is one of the tribe and I think shares his (and they always are male) income around. They also make money selling stuff to tourists. The response varied from village to village, some were welcoming, like this one, others seemed to barely tolerate tourists; once they had exhausted their efforts to sell their stuff (which we weren't interested in buying, for the most part). This one was one of the most fun to visit. I must confess to feeling uncomfortable turning up in these places and effectively paying to take photos and have a look around. It's all a bit voyeuristic (not of a sexual nature of course - but you know what I mean)

Not sure that there is anything especially wrong with us humans. We are not alone in protecting territory, perhaps just somewhat more organised about it, forming alliances for mutual benefit and applying our ingenuity to devising more effective means. For these people it is about access to land, upon which their survival depends. Soon, though access to water will become more important as the Omo river is being dammed, by forces much greater than they can resist and their lifestyle will become unsustainable. The next steps for them I fear will be worse than they have experienced in their inter-tribal skirmishes.
