Great emka 2018-01-11 11:23

Hello again,

Famous Vatnajokull. Interesting view of this large glacier. It seems heavily polluted. Or maybe the grey are just the ashes? I saw very big glaciers in Patagonia, it was fascinating, I even walked on them. The heavy cloud hanging over looks dramatic. I look with the great interest as I plan to go to Iceland in summer. How have you moved around? I ma afraid you went by car. I have no driving licence :( so I do not know how to visit interesting places.

Kind regrad s MAlgo

Default To emka: Getting around

Hi Malgo.

Yes, we drove around Iceland - anticlockwise on the ring road over 10 days. Everything, including car hire, whale watching, a glacier lake boat trip, and all accommodation, was booked months beforehand.

The best alternative in my view would be a small group tour. There are so many agents in Iceland dealing with that sort of thing.

For public transport, it's basically bus or plane.
Here are some worthwhile links:
- with this one you can select any town and find out where you can go from there.

Obviously, public transport is going to be much more feasible in Summer than Winter.

One thing to remember about Iceland is that it is very expensive. Going into any restaurant for an evening meal you should expect a main course to cost US$45 - 50. Accommodation can also be extremely expensive.

Another important point - if you wish to go between June and August, there are many, many tourists, and it's a very good idea to book your trip well beforehand. I booked our June trip in early March. I would not leave it any later than that.

But if you can go, it is a fabulous country. We absolutely loved it and would return again tomorrow if we could. My only regret is that we did not have the opportunity to go into the inland very much, as the roads are mainly for 4WD vehicles. That's one thing which might be good about a small group tour.

Hope that is helpful for you.
