Baobab, a photo from Plateau, South

Photographer's Note

While I have seen many pictures of baobabs on TE, I have yet to cross one taken from Benin. Here then is a Beninese baobab tree taken during the dry season. I'm fairly certain that baobabs shed their leaves annually during the dry season, which is why none are present here.

Baobabs, according to what I learnt while in Benin, are sometimes called elephant trees (surely due to their massive size!). Others say they are upside down trees ... without the leaves, the branches look more like roots.

Baobabs also bear fruit, which are edible. I've uploaded a photo in the workshop so you can see what these look like (you eat the non-stringy white stuff).

Hello Caleb,
How I miss the magnificent baobabs of West Africa. I like this picture not just because of the tree, but for the details such as the men on the motor-bike and the pot beside the street. I was also interested in seeing the WS of the baobab fruit. I never managed to find out what it was like. I have a vague memory of bying one but couldn't open it!

Hi Caleb,

Benin? I thought I'm very well travel, but I guess that is only my wishful thinking. I have not much idea about Benin, I may have heard of it it, but not sure if it part of country or a region. Live and learn, another geography lesson. Yes, I have seen a few of the baobabs tree here, but this is first from here and also as part of a daily life image and not from like national park. Really cool looking tree and the village with a motorcycle passing through adds to the way of life in the village. Good shot and deserved much more attention. Thanks.

One cannot help but love that tree. I appreciate the simple colour pallet in this photo as well as the crisp sharp details.
