No need for tickets, a photo from Hauts-Bassins, West

Photographer's Note

There is not much to say about this photo from Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso in January 1982.

I was walking past the city's football stadium when I saw these young men and boys watching a game from the surrounding wall. I thought it looked a bit funny, so I took a photo.

"Bravolta" was one of the two brands of beer brewed in Burkina Faso while the country was still known as Upper Volta. The other brand was "Sovobra".

Yes, of course I tasted them both, and more than once. Just ordinary light lagers. Nothing special.

This was as usual scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

No workshop today, but my next photo will show a talented football player.

Hello Gert,

The more I look at this photograph the more amused I become! And even when I was at my youngest and fittest I don't think I would have contemplated trying to climb up to sit on the top of that wall which must be at least four metres high - and how to get down again without breaking a leg?

And thank goodness for those discarded motor tyres to allow these ticket-dodgers easier access to their very own personal grandstand!

Again a very fine photograph of excellent quality, a tribute to your scanning skills, your photographic abilities of nearly 40 years ago and, of course, good ol' Kodachrome.

A great moment shown here, and I will tell why: When we were youngsters during the late 60th, and did not have money for tickets, my friends and myself were doing just the very same, climbing walls in order to see a football match in our local stadium... so it is not only for Africa, happened here as well...

Et virkelig artig bilde. De fleste på bildet ser på et eller annet vis ut til å være opptatt av kampen som foregår på andre siden av muren. De har åpenbart brukt de gamle bildekkene for å få plass øverst på muren. De to guttene helt til venstre i bildet, ser ut som at de har veldig lyst å se kampen, mens de to til høyre ikke ser ut til å bry seg veldig. Reklamen for det lokale ølmerket er prikken over i-en. Veldig bra:)

a funny image with the pirate public invading the walls of the stadium. haha .
here in my town they broke the bricks of the wall and it is filled with many holes and you can watch the game outside. nowadays they are restoring the municipal stadium..

Quite an undertaking to watch for free. The car tires do not completely help either.
But tickets may not be financially viable for many.
A funny photo that I would most likely also take.
Would the beer 'Bravolta' now be called 'Brafaso'?

Hello Gert, wherever there is a game of football, there will always be some who will try to watch from the side lines without having to pay! Ingenious use of the tyres, using them as a step up!
The different poses and body language make for an interesting picture.

Gert, these spectators used old tyres to climb to the wall that encircles the stadium. They seat on the wall to watch the football match. I like the ad for the local beer. Nice slice of life presented. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Haha, et udmærket billede med de mange drenge der sidder højt oppe på muren for at se fodboldkampen. Flere tilskuere var på vej og forsøgte at klatre op. Virkelig godt fanget. Fint lys og fine farver desuden og ølskiltet er også en god detalje.

Hej kära Gert, en underhållande scen med dessa män som sitter på den höga väggen för att observera fotbollsmatchen. Jag undrar hur de lyckas klättra. Vi ser att de kan använda de gamla däcken, men kommer killen till vänster att lyckas? Numera skulle du förmodligen vänta och se (och ta en bild). Stora färger på kläder som kontrasterar väl mot väggen. Fantastisk kvalitet som alltid.

Jag har hört talas om den nya översättaren, som heter DeepL, bättre än Google, det här är mitt försök. Paul sa att holländska var korrekt. Vad sägs om svenska?

Magnificent photos, which pass the time very well, very curious to see all this line of boys sitting on the wall, which is quite high, but as we see others, they have no problem climbing it. Good contrast the beige-reddish line of the wall and the green of the trees covering the top.
Gorgeous POV, very pleasing to the eye.
Colorful, sharp and bright are captured effectively.
Very good composition, magnificent presentation.

It is a tall fence, and looking closely it seems that they have added a few layers of bricks afterwards. But that doesn't keep these extra spectators away. Some effort, and probably some cooperation, is needed to get up there! Well seen daily life scene.

Something special, football fans wanting to see the game through the trees leaves but not paying the entrance. Though the wall is high, they managed to climb on it thanks to some old tyres and the cracks on the pilars. No women!

All 3 old photos of Bobo - so much to see only on one street. It was slightly more than 38 years ago.....I don't think you would see them as it was in your pictures. I'm pleased that you found them to show us the authenticity of the place. I'm looking forward the next photo. The picture will speaks for it self even with no notes.

Oh, I love this!
It reminds me so much of when I was a child and, with my parents, used to visit our local football matches, when they were playing at home. The cost was very minimal but there were young boys and teenagers who either couldn't afford the entrance fee or refused to pay the entrance fee and clambered over the walls. An official was supposed to keep watch, but he was very genial!

It is such a typical scene but, I wonder how often has been recorded!
These young men were very astute, using tyres as steps, easy to move, if need be, to a new place when the wall is full! Also, soft to land on if anyone fell!

You were as astute as the spectators, capturing this fun shot so well.
It is a fine scan! The colours are very natural.

There is a new app for scanning slides using your phone. Have you used it or seen it being used?
