Photographer's Note

With my last photo I promised to show a talented football player this time, and here he is.

He played for himself, but I am sure that in his imagination no defense players could possibly stop him from scoring a beautiful goal.

I saw this boy outside the famous Great Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso in southwestern Burkina Faso. This was in January 1982. In recent photos it looks very different. The tower (minaret) seen here is gone and two other minarets have been added. The wall also looks much whiter and cleaner. It has obviously gone through major restoration since 1982.

This mosque was built sometime in the 19th century (various sources provide various years), so it must have been restored many times, considering it was built of mud and straw and wood. In Djenné in neighbouring Mali, the most famous mud mosque in the region gets regularly spruced up in a yearly festival involving the entire local population.

In the WS you can see a lot of boys from Bobo-Dioulasso. Both photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
