Photographer's Note

On the square in front of the palace the walls are painted with the names of kings (since 1394) with in the right column the specific writing of the Bamouns.
The bamoun has its own writing developed by the king of the Bamouns Ibrahim Njoya around 1895; since its creation this alphabet has known many evolutions; it now has 205 signs (more than 400 at the beginning).
the kingdom of Bamoun reached its peak in the eighteenth century, then was dismantled by French colonization. Today, the King of the Bamouns – the 19th descendant of one of the oldest dynasties in Africa – still rules over a Bamoun kingdom that corresponds to several cities in the department of Noun.
