A Windward Island, a photo from Boa Vista, Barlavento

Photographer's Note

My fourth and final photo from Praia da Varandinha. The green waters and fine sand meet here with volcanic rocks, which are absent on most beaches of Boa Vista. A relatively rare and so very photogenic sight. This picture, I believe, helps to get some orientation. You have seen one from the top of the cliffs, which aren’t that high, one from the cave in between the rocks and one from where the rocks started. Coming from the north, far behind my back I left all rocky Turtle Bay, which was followed by some sandy stretch, one of the places where turtles lay their eggs, then came this lovely beach and this one is followed further south by the most famous and paradisiac Santa Monica Beach, which I will show you next.

Ten islands of Cape Verde are divided into two groups, the northern islands of the Cape Verde archipelago, including Boa Vista, are called Ilhas de Barlavento (Windward Islands), while the southern islands are called Ilhas de Sotavento (Leeward Islands). you can understand why Cape Verde Islands played an important role in the transatlantic trade in the past. Slaves were taken from the West Africa with the wind to America and other goods were brought back from America to Europe.

These days winds on the beach are more of interest to tourists or sportsmen. Most of beaches around Boa Vista are windy which is great news for sports, fewer of them have calm waters.

A great view of the coastline with the sandy beach in the foreground and the cliffs at left, the ones further away emerge nicely from a slight haze. Very well composed shot.

we can see as the mass of the rock surface faced the sea and the sea throw sand against it too. it isn't easy to live inside an small island and in a dry region is even worst, not for chance a big part of the population of these islands are living in other places, the same number inside and outside.

Good framing placing the horizon line slightly off centre. Excellent sharpness and nice warm vs cold colour contrasts. The hole in the rock base at left adds nice graphism. Tfs!
