Nyiragongo - lava lake on June 2010

Picture of the lava lake of Mount Nyiragongo (3470m) in June 2010. Picture taken from the crater summit.

The Nyiragongo is a stratovolcano belonging to the Virunga volcanic region located just at the northern end of lake Kivu.

The volcano is composed of a central cone of 1300 m of diameter and two platforms called terraces. On this picture you see a part of the third terrace and the lava lake (220 m of diameter). It just collapsed of 30 m on the night of June 3 and 1 million cubic meter of lava disappeared (probably dyke injection).
