Photographer's Note
One of my favourite places to visit when down at the coast is Walvis Bay. Not for what the town has to offer, which isn’t much, but a drive past the lagoon takes you to the salt works where a series of manmade salt evaporation ponds are pumped with sea water. The ground is flat and salt encrusted and on a misty day all can look rather dull and grey but on a sunny day the colours of the plankton ladened water is amazing and the crusty salt is pale pink or snow white. I have posted pictures of this location before, this one shows a wider view.

Amazing colors, Rosemary, men made magic tones.
Excelent view all the way as far as the horizon, good clear image, and the colors are stunning with contrast to blue sky.

Hello Rosemary,
Fabulous colours and an informative note. Makes me think of camping in the desert not far from Cape Cross where there also were salt works. In charge was a German man .... lived like a recluse, never went anywhere ... the salt trucks brought his meagre supplies back from Walfish Bay and Swakop for him. He never spoke English and tested my German very well but he had lots of cowboy books ... especially Louis L'Amour's ... all in English, of course, and I would borrow from him. We would sit at the kitchen table and have a few Kleine-Kleine but he refused to tell me where he had found the satin spar with fibre length of more than 20 cm - the longest I ever found was less than 10 cm. But how the gypsum fields formed is another story. Thank you for jostling my memory with this image. Do the salt works at Cape Cross still exist?
Best wishes.

Hi Rosemary
how could anyone not love this!
at first glance, it looks like an arrow head.
strong angular lines, i see triangles, rectangles, and a wicked collection of colors. that salmon-red-pink is really the standout!
love the subject and the blue portion for contrast.
nice shot
cheers

Hello Rosemary,
incredible colours, enhanced by a very high horizon and an almost complete lack of solid ground.
At which time of the day has your photo been taken?

Hello Rosemary,
Another amazing capture from Namibia.
Good pov and good graphism.
I only wonder if this color is been created by the planktons or a kind of shrimp (artemia salina) which gives also the pink color to the feather of flamingo's !
TFS and best regards

la macchia rosa è veramente immensa e la bella luce la fa risplendere e contrastare con il resto del paesaggio.

The low angle workds wonderfully here, Rosemary - the pink water and sand fill up the frame creating an abstract work with a horizon. Are those buildings on the horizon? If so, they're wonderfully placed and provide great scope.

Kia ora Rosemary,
Great picture. It always amazes me how salt pans turn quite red as the water evaporates. I've seen this same effect in salt pans in New Zealand, India & Egypt. I have been told it is a salt-tolerant algae. Cheers, Neil

A spectacular one Rosemary - probably the reddest and largest pink lake that I've seen - having said that I notice that they are artificial lakes and what I've seen in Australia and Canada are natural. So ... a great view with great colour.
cheers and all the best for 2013.

I already saw some airplanes shots of Walvis bay in some newspaper (perhaps National Geographic), but it is the first time I see shot from ground of those colorfull salt water fields.
The composition is original and works good to evidence the specificity of this.

Hi Rosemary,
amazing view. I like very much the pink color here. Nice white salt surface in the foreground. Blue sky adds a referece that we are still on the Earth.
Very well done,

hello Rosemary
of course, the pink color is attractive! This is why the pink flamingoes have also this stunning hue, because they ingest the plancton.

Hello Rosemary,
The low point of view is a very good idea: we can see many details on the salt and enjoy the view on this rose water.
Well done!

Hi Rosemary,
I like these rather conflicting colors in your image, they bear a strong visual impact and underline the uniqueness of this place.
I remember seeing similar salt ponds in Tunisia but of natural origin filled by the rains in winter and drying up in summer. One of them was of the same red color but not beacause of plankton but because of the high ferrum content. And the other one contained lots of cuprum and was bright cyan. Situated side by side and fringed with the same white salt crystals as you show here they certainly had a wow effect on the tourists.
As for this shot - I'd say you're a master of composition. All your images are always carefully thought out and you choose the best perspective possible.
Best wishes and happy Christmas

Hello Roasemary!
I missed this colourful image...I have read about planktons which lend colour to salt water, but when I see your picture it's quite a wow! Nature & its wonders indeed! Interesting picture with the white salt banks breaking the red & I feel the ripples created by the wind create a good visual appeal, rather than a placid water.
With warmest Regards
Angshu

Hello Rosemary,
Wonderful and colorful picture and landscape.
The diagonal lines creates a nice depth. The
open space makes the picture nice calmness.
Light management is also excellent.
Friendly regards,
Robert Alderliefste
p.s.
Are these colours of the plankton not the
reason that the Flamingos are pink?
mini-psig (56) 2013-01-31 4:03
Les différentes couleurs de l'eau sont intéressantes et très vives. Comme quoi, le sel a d'autres avantages que dans notre assiette !
