Photographer's Note
It’s a while since I’ve posted a landscape photograph from Namibia. Last weekend we had a quick trip away to the coast and as usual we visited one of my favourite places – the salt pans! Depending on the weather and season the man-made pans, which link up with the natural lagoon, can be grey and desolate or brilliantly colourful. We were in luck, the evaporation ponds were tinted pink. In this shot you can see a narrow road running between the salt pan and the lagoon. Salt is crystallizing through evaporation and is exposed in the algae-rich sea water.
Walvis Bay has one of the largest salt works in Africa. The seawater is fed into large ponds, which gradually dry out through natural evaporation. The colour indicates the salinity of the ponds. Micro-organisms change their hues as the salinity of the pond increases. In low to mid-salinity ponds, green algae are predominant. In middle to high salinity ponds, an algae called Dunaliella salina shifts the colour to red. The salt fields of Walvis Bay cover an area of 3 500 hectares and annually produce 400 000 tons of high-quality salt. This successful commercial enterprise also provides an ideal habitat for many species of marine birds.

Hello Rosemary,
This is a photo that really jumps at us already among the thumbnails. With such fabulous colours it can't be missed. The brilliantly blue sky matches the tones of the salt, pink gradually turning purple. It's a beautiful but also informative photo, accompanied by an interesting note.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Rosemary
Gorgeous, the colour is bang on, yes the vivid red saltish water is real and it is a strange sight when you see it in person i am sure. The composition is wonderful works best here, I think I never tire of seeing shot of this nature beauty, good detail throughout which is subtly exposed particularly I love the foamy ripples that you managed to capture. It's just breathtaking indeed, coupled with the awesome contrast to blue sky, a shot looks out of this world......
and great too that the vehicle makes it work!
Congrats :)
Best regards

Hello Rosemary,
Looks like Moses has struck again ! ;) The blood-coloured water is nicely balanced by the blue sky, and is all the more intriguing that the salt keeps its pearly white colour after drying. The FG salt evokes the shape of sea foam carried on waves to the shore. The little causeway seems to be going on endlessly and gives great depth to the perspective. A spectacular shot of this amazing place.
Best regards,
Jean

Hi Rosemary
Sorry to sound morbid, but from the thumbnail I really thought this looked like a sea of blood crashing against the land, and as a fan of horror films, I love the concept. To me, this is such an alien landscape, so surreal and so beautiful. It was a very nice idea to include the car on the stretch of road, I wouldn't have thought to do that but it works perfectly well. Nice one
Cheers

Hello Rosemary,
It looks like a bleeding sea. A natural phenomenon that I've never seen with my own eyes. Very surreal.
Wonderful under that solid blue sky.

una produzione enorme, ma anche un palcoscenico fantastico per un amante della fotografia.
Bel colpo, la colorazione della salina è meravigliosa e il cielo fa da splendido fondale.

Hello Rosemary,
The salmon pink color of the salt lake is striking and contrasts well against the blue sky. Good sharpness and a nice exposure on the highly reflective salt. The road at right adds deep lead in lines and perspective and the vehicle makes a fine focal point. Nice repetition of the patterns formed by the dried salt. Tfs.

Ciao cara Rosemary
This photo takes me back to when I was first discovering your beautiful Gallery. I distinctly remember it was a photo of a saltpan that took my breath away. And you do that again with this photo. Superb colours, perspective and compositional framing. The car is dwarfed by this wonderful natural phenomena and the textures of the salt are just a delight. Well done and I hope it's still ok to pinch this one for my Saltpans theme.

Bonjour Rosemary
Il semble y avoir énormément beaucoup de sel dans cette eau d'un très beau rose qui contraste bien avec le beau bleu de ce ciel africain. La route sur le côté donne une belle profondeur à l'ensemble.

Hello Rosemary,
i find both the colours and the textures fascinating, this pastel coloured area is amazing and we are given a generous view of it. The smooth, contrasting sky and the glimpse of the road on the right, complement the scene in simple but very effective ways. The car draws us along the perspective and offers a useful point of reference regarding scale too. You managed the strong light superbly, the colours are so well defined, even the subtlest hues. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

This salt could have been taken in Salt Lake City in Utah. It's very interesting phenomena and I keep thinking about going to Utah to photograph the lake again. You did a wonderful job capturing this scene especially the water which is almost white. Love the colors. Good details. Well done, tfs.

Hi Rosemary.
After a few days of vacation, I'm again active in TE, enjoying your images ........... with which I can see, because I see that the page is still bad, after so many days.
A wonderful and spectacular composition, with those salt formations, also draws much attention that pink sea water, I guess it must be for the existence of some algae, both the road and the plain, give a good perspective.
Very nice colorful tones very effective.
Good management of brightness and sharpness.
Superb image. My congratulations.
All the best and have a good start to the week.
Luis.

Hi Rosemary,
amazing landscape, I love deserts! I have never seen this orange colored salt flats. This adds one more extraordinary color to the scene! Great use of the car: it provides the sense of the scale for this huge spaces. I would love to be in a weekend-distance from such beauties.
Excellent work,

Hello Rosemary,
It seems like you took a sabbatical from Trekearth. Happily, you still have some beauties I've missed. This image, along with its informative commentary, is worthy of the National Geographic. Except for your care, nicely placed for scale, also suggests the image was produced on this planet rather than on a planet of a distant solar system.
Warm regards,
Bulent
