Photographer's Note
I have posted a shot of the Walvis Bay salt pans before. This is a more recent shot taken when both the green and red algae were visible.
Walvis Bay has one of the largest salt works in Africa. The seawater is fed into large ponds, which gradually dry out through natural evaporation. The colour indicates the salinity of the ponds. Micro-organisms change their hues as the salinity of the pond increases. In low to mid-salinity ponds, green algae are predominant. In middle to high salinity ponds, an algae called Dunaliella salina shifts the colour to red. The salt fields of Walvis Bay cover an area of 3 500 hectares and annually produce 400 000 tons of high-quality salt. This successful commercial enterprise also provides an ideal habitat for many species of marine birds.

Hello Rosemary,
A beautiful and very interesting photo. Just as I was wondering what causes the colour of the brine you explained it inyour note. Thank you. Would be interesting also to know why the area is below sea level and does not seem to get flooded. I think that is the reason for salt being produced there - that the water does not have to be pumped from the sea.

Hi Rosemary,
A similar photo of yours was one the first that drew my attention when I joined TE. This one is even better and I think because of the inclusion of the white diaganol. The sharpness and light management is excellent giving lovely layers of interesting colour. The small cloud in the sky is also rather pleasing. You have given an interesting note regarding the micro-organisms and the colours.
Kind Regards, Ann

Hi Rosemary
Fabulous image from another part of the world to add to my visiting list!. Really an eye catching great nature image. This works very well everything balances nicely with the glorious colours. Excellent composition with the diagonals which provide great lead-in lines. You've done a great job of retaining detail in the fg and wonderful layers of colors across the land. The stunning red contrast so well to the environment. Brilliant exposure, crystal clear and nice tones. Great detail and dof all spot on. Great photo work, Congrats

Very interesting scene with usual informative notes Dear Rosemary.
I don't recall seeing those ponds in Walvis Bay, probably because we drove from there at dark.
A tiny little nit-picking would be the slight need for levelling the horizon.
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Rosemary,
Very great picture for the composition and the colors. The red is like blood and reinforces the pure white salt. The blue and green in the background are another colored layer which fits perfectly the foreground and contrasts with the strength of it.
Cheers
