Photographer's Note

The main reason that I decided to go with the organized tour to Senegal was a visit to Bassari country.

They live in remote places but of course, not as remote that we couldn't get there. But it was quite tiresome trekking. All inhabitants came to meet us, the chief of the villages told very interesting stories from history and legends. There came an old woman, they told she was 108 years old, how could they know? The visit of tourists is for them the occasion to show their original products and to sell something. Unique were the masks that are worn in initiation celebrations. Usually, I do not buy anything, but here I bought a mask and two wooden figures.

A very good photo of this girl. It's a beautiful portrait and she looks so well up into the camera. Her dress has some beautiful and appealing colours and patterns. The thatched roof also makes a good backdrop right behind the elaborate braids in her hair.

Hello Malgo,
what does she think of the white lady who took her photo? She is not in a very friendly temper, but that makes the photo unique. Did you show the picture to her on your display? I wonder if she has any idea of the world where the visitors come from.

Hello Malgo,
This is a wonderful portrait. It's colourful and perfectly sharp and well exposed. But most of all I love the girl's posture and the way she is looking at you. Her face could express boredom, but probably more curiosity and some shyness. I like that she doesn't smile but behaves naturally, leaning her head on her right hand, looking you straight into your eyes. And I love her hairstyle too, with all these braids that fascinated me so much when I travelled through West Africa in the early 80's.

Excellent capture of this little girl with a pensive expression, but perhaps inscrutable is a better word, very difficult to discern what she is think being photographed by this white lady in transit through her village. Perfectly rendered colours and superb clarity.

You wonder what she is thinking about, what she would love to be doing!

Great shot, Malgo. The girl looks bored that just adds to the ambience of the picture. Great crop at the top too, leaving that layer of straw in. Excellent!

It is difficult to determine whether this girl looks angry, bored or both.
In any case, no friendly smile for the photographer.
She does not care how she looks at the picture. No desire to become a model.
