A Zulu for Lagerfeld, a photo from KwaZulu-Natal, East

Photographer's Note

While we were attending a Zulu ceremony - please see previous photo - I've spotted this girl of whom I wanted to take photos, because of her interesting traditional clothes.

When I asked her to be photographed, she began to bend on every sides and taking poses like if we were shooting for the next Vogue magazine cover.

I found it amusing, as even if she is living in a mud house in the most remote area, she was undoubtedly aware of who's Bar Refaeli, Chanel Iman and Heidi Klum, like every girls of her age.

very fine portrait shot with this young lady...like her relaxed expression to camera with nice pose...like her black outfit...nice skin tone also...the textured wall work as a BG here...
very good light management with nice color tones & sharpness...

Hello Andre - Your note made me smile, the young lady obviously thought you were a talent-scout! I love the mud wall for, despite the pose, together with the colourful and lovely bead-work gives a little narrative to the shot. I like the way the girl plays to the camera, she gives good eye contact and the tilt of her hip gives a nice line to the shot. Go well. Rosemary

with her beautiful dress she could be a model for the fashion magazine. Fantastic portrait of the Zulu girl. Difficult to blieve that she lives so far from civilization. She seems well aware of her beauty. Excellent colours and sharpness. i like her necklace against the black T-shirt, it looks very attractive.

Bonjour André,

Merci pour la note qui compléte bien ce portrait et nous permet de la lire différement. Elle m'a bien plu.
Une chose est certaine, elle a confiance en elle et ça se voit sur la photo. Il y a une véritable présence.
Effectivement, le contraste entre les habits et les murs en terre apporte un surtout d'originalité à cette photo. Tu devrais justement proposer à Vogue de faire des photos de mannequins dans un village traditionnel ;-)

Sa pose non rigide en fait tout le charme, et elle l'a bien enregistré. Le fond de hutte de terre battue met bien en valeur cette beauté intérieure et ses bijoux.

Haha... For Lagerfeld! T'y vas pas avec le dos de la cuillère! A vrai dire c'est beaucoup moins sa pose qui me retient ici; que le visage sensuel aux lèvres généreuses et à l'expression ambitieuse et exigente. J'aime beaucoup la coiffe et les colliers en ornement. les couleurs sont superbes. La netteté est impeccable. Le visage semble rayonner d'une lumière interne. Tu as éffectué un micro post-traitement sur son visage? Il semble presque trop lisse, avec une texture douce, pour être vrai. Comme si elle avait subi une retouche que n'hésitent pas à faire les magazines, justement! Le fond craquelé en pisé en arrière-plan semble beaucoup plus naturel. En tous cas, il fournit un contraste idéal pour sa silhouette.

Well, this young lady certainly knows how to pose for the camera!

You have made the most of some wonderful diffuse lighting here as we can clearly see the beautiful smoothness of her skin and all the details of her fine features - not always an easy thing to do with black people. Fabulous well saturated (though not overly so) colours, good composition and exquisite sharpness. The plain monochrome background of a mud wall shows her off to advantage too.
