Photographer's Note

I was wandering past an open door whilst in Tembisa one day and came across this scene. It was pretty dark in her 'shack' and she was using the light coming in through the door to pluck the chicken.
A little kitten was intent in getting its share of any discarded pieces and it was quite funny to watch it jumping at the chicken every few minutes.
Travelling down the main streets of Tembisa (and it is the same in all townships I have visited in South Africa) live chickens are kept in wire cages for the local people to buy.
It makes one wonder why she does not make a journey to a supermarket and just buy a fresh chicken there but this is her culture, her tradition and that is what I love to witness when I frequent the streets of Tembisa.
