Forever in Love, a photo from Bukhara, West

Photographer's Note

Rarely have we encountered people so enthusiastic to be photographed as in Uzbekistan. Even rarer was the fact that all of them wanted to be photographed with us, as if we were celebrities of some sort (sic)!

This is a picture I took in Bukhara. Bukhara is an ancient oasis city in Uzbekistan, along the fabled Silk Road. For centuries it was a centre of trade and Islam, earning the title Bukhoro-i-Sharif, or "Noble Bukhara" among Muslims (one of the seven holy cities of Islam). The city was founded in the 1st century AD. The city itself boasts impressive architecture and history. It is one of the few places in Central Asia where one can feel the heartbeat of ancient Central Asia. Most of the city remains intact and most of the 250,000 inhabitants are members of families who have lived there for generations upon generations.

One day as we walked around the streets of old Bukhara, this elderly couple wanted to be photographed. A few words were spoken, translated, but their eyes gave away what was there in their minds….happiness and gratefulness…and that is just for taking their pictures. We were really touched by their humility.

I suspect the title has a double meaning!
Will you be forever in love with these amazing people and their amazing place?

This is THE most delightful photograph of the couple. It is informal and yet precise. It is colourful and expressive. Perfect use of shallow dof.

Hello Angshuman. What a fascinating double portrait of Uzbekistan. The title is very well chosen. I like the narrow picture, because only the essential remains. And by the way reminds me of the photo of my stay in this beautiful country and its friendly people.

This is an absolutely lovely and charming photo, besides being technically perfect with superb light, colours and sharpness. Clearly you were not alone here, since they are looking into somebody else's camera. I think I prefer this angle, seeing the from the side. They look like such a very sweet couple and your title is probably very correct. How absurd that such beautiful, friendly people have to suffer such a terrible, murderous regime. Why don't they have a beautiful and friendly President? :-(

Hello Angshu - I love the way this elderly couple are tilting their heads towards each other, their body language and the obvious happy togetherness shown in their faces is touching and very special. A delightful image and a super note. I am impressed by the excellent textures in their skin... the woman's face looks so soft.

How a sweet old couple. Fantastic double portrait, we see that they are in love for many years and will for ever. Such beautiful picture full of tenderness. Very touching. It happens very often in China (and in India too:)) that they want to have photos with foreigners.
Uzbekistan in high in my bucket list but still other places are a bit higher.
