Arch and Minaret, a photo from Yazd, East

Photographer's Note

The shot shows an old alley to the Fahraj ancient Jameh mosque.
Fahraj lies on the old route between Yazd and Bafgh.
The Jame mosque of Fahraj is from the earlier Islamic era. The mosque primarily consists of an internal courtyard, vaulted sanctuary and arcades, and a clay minaret. It is largely built of sun-dried, unfired clay tiles and mud bricks.
This ancient mosque is about 1400 years old and the minaret seen in the shot, added to the mosque later in the tenth century and is one of the earliest extant examples of its type. The minaret is built as a tapering cylinder with an internal spiral staircase lit by slits that form a regular pattern on the minaret's external elevation. The projecting balcony is crowned by triangular crenellations with a pronounced batter (a slope, as of the outer face of a wall , that recedes from bottom to top), accentuating the minaret's verticality. The Fahraj minaret is one of the first known Iranian minarets after the minaret at Siraf, and has played a pivotal role in developing the cylindrical minaret form, that was later carried far with Seljuk conquests to Syria, Anatolia, Iraq, Afghanistan and India.

A POV very well selcetd whith the arcades which give a framing to the view and too a greta depht to the image with the prospect open. Very nice contratst shade/light very well collected. Beautiful warm colors under a blue sky.

I can still see faintly the detail inside on the ceiling of the walkway. the arch framed the scenery perfectly, lead our vision right to the tower. Fantastic shot, one of your top 10 photos.

Good composition and great control of highlights. A picture with great perspective, love the way you use the arch and the pathway to lead the eyes to wander into the background and the minaret. Excellent deatil and sharpness, Tthe textured pebbles stone is fascinating with lots of charm about this place and wonderful use of shadows enhancing the depth even further. The contrast against blue sky is fantastic. A very pleasing and atmospheric to me. Brilliant capture. Congrats.

A very well conceived composition. The opening of the arcade is not in the center of the frame and a large dark space above gives a great perspective both to the depth of the space and to the mosque. It is very nice to see the mosque in the sunlight under the blue sky creating a nicely controlled contrast. The presence of the clay minaret is vital to let us know of the presence of an ancient mosque behind the wall, visually. I appreciate the overall natural color of your photo. And a small amount of vegetation can be seen, it is a great addition to the composition. I also appreciate a very informative description of this ancient mosque. Clean stone paving of the street gives me a very strong impression on me. The way you observe the mosque is very gentle. I like the image very much.
