Hellenistic Tower of Zeus Olbios,Kanlidivane (Kanytelleis / Kanytelis), Erdemli, Mersin, Turkey

Kanlidivane or Kanytelleis (Kanytelis) is located 50 km northeast of Silifke, in the mountains inland from the coastal highway. You can get there by means of the 3 km road that turns into north from Yemişkumu Neighbourhood, which is 17 km away from Erdemli. This large site was settled in the late 3rd century BC and continued to be occupied into the 11th century AD.

The settlement is located around and in the North of a big sinkhole. Being the biggest one amogst the natural ditches that is formed by frequent karsts in the Taurus Mountains, this sinkhole is thought to have always had a holy function since the Early Ages. Kanlidivane is an important religious centre within the borders of Olba Kingdom in the Antique Period.

On the southwestern edge of the sinkhole there is a Hellenistic tower. The inscription on the western facade of the tower says that it was built by Teukros, the son of Tarkyaris, one of the priest-kings of Olba and dedicated to Zeus. At the middle of the edge where eastern and southern walls of the tower meet, there is a bas-relief of a triskelis, three-legs arranged in the form of a wheel, a figure that is also seen on the coins minted by the Kingdom of Olba. Kanlıdivane veya eski adıyla Kanytelleis (Kanytelis) Silifke’nin 50 km kuzeydoğusunda, sahil yolunun kara tarafındaki dağlık alanda yer alır. Erdemli’ye 17 km uzaklıktaki Yemişkumu mahallesinden kuzeye sapan 3 km.’lik yolla ulaşılmaktadır. M.Ö. 3. yüzyılda iskan edilmeye başlanmış ve M.S. 11. yüzyıla kadar kullanılmıştır.

Şehir büyük bir obruğun etrafında ve kuzeyinde kurulmuştur. Toroslarda çok rastlanan karst olayıyla meydana gelen doğal çukurların en büyüklerinden olan bu obruğun İlk Çağlardan beri kutsal görüldüğü anlaşılmaktadır. Kanlıdivane Antik dönemde Olba’ya bağlı bir kenttir.

Obruğun güneybatı kenarında yükselen Helenistik kulenin batı duvarındaki kitabede, kulenin rahip krallardan Olbalı Tarkyaris'in oğlu Teukros tarafından yaptırıldığı ve Zeus’a adandığı yazılı. Tapınağın doğu ve güney duvarlarının birleştiği köşenin orta yerinde bulunan kitabede, Olba Krallığı'na ait sikkelerde görülen Triskeles (Üç ayak) kabartması var. Kulenin yapımının MÖ. 3.Yüzyılda gerçekleştiği tahmin edilmektedir.
