Photographer's Note

Desolate streets of Kargil early evening, devoid of street lamps, devoid of people, an obscure orgy of disappearing shadows..the town continues to exhibit a sombre mood, perhaps a stigma of the war it had seen years back.

During the day the same arterial street gets choked with life..

Kargil became quite prominent because of the Kargil War also known as the Kargil conflict, was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan between May and July 1999.

Gooodeveniiing Sayeed!

Aie Aie aie. You will not like what I want to say. But anyway I say it. Don't slap me yet.I would prefer to see this one cropped in square. Aieeee. Yes, i know, you don't like that. But i don't like the mess down, and I don't see what it really brings to the picture. For me, what is important, is the bulb and the shadow; that gives the idea of both the stigma and of the hope that, despite all the traumas, have not deserted the place. Good management of light for a very special mood. With your darker and more experimental shots, you always seem to depict the depth of the human soul; that's not attractive for everybody but I find this very c hallenging and well mastered. And I appreciate this.Congratulations.

Hi Sayeed,
I will offer a different view. For me, if you crop the bottom stuff and keep the silhoette of the face next to the bulb, does not offer enough context to the picture. In other words, it is not enough to look pretty and clever, it must have more depth. And that depth, that more intimate feel here is given by the mish-mash of the stuff beautifully lit by the bulb. Superb color tones, and like your choice of focus.

This is quite an obscure one, I think. There's very little here which is truly identifiable to my eye. Nevertheless, the mood is very strong, and perhaps the obscurity even adds to that!

yesterday,when I came on this picture,I didn't let a critique because I had no more green face!But I thought that it was one more time a superb picture well in your style!Yes,maybe the face in the shadow doesn't offer enough contrast,but,the lights and the colors are so beautiful,and the idea so great!And yes,the contrast would has been better with a crop of the bottom,and the top,and this is so easy to correct!Not far to be perfect!

Hi Sayeed,

Given the settings that are visible, you presumably pushed the ISO as high as possible to get the light you have got on the scene.

I think it is a fantastic shot - firstly, the amount of debate it has produced says something about its status as a genuine artwork. The mood you have generated shines out from this picture - and I think that it is important that the background 'clutter' should be high noise - that is the point of the background to me, we are not supposed to identify it cleary: we can talk of the Everyman figure in art, why not the Everyclutter?

A great shot, full of atmosphere and a brave subverting of the 'rules' of photography to meet your artistic aims.
