Photographer's Note
VIEW FROM THE STREET
This photograph is a sequel to View From the Top that I posted last Sunday. There the vantage point was the 25th floor of a hotel/condo, looking down at Central Park, in the area known as Central Park South. This is the view from street level on 59th Street, where hansom cabs line up to offer romantic tours of fashionable uptown New York City.
HANSOM CAB
The hansom cab is a horse-drawn carriage originally designed and patented by Joseph Hansom in York, England in 1834. Although it has evolved somewhat from its original form, it still features a wide wheelbase, large wheels, light body weight, and low center of gravity features collaborating to create conditions to travel at high speed and maneuver corner with safety. (These words also describe design features for Ferraris and Porsches, but in the case of the hansom cab the engine is rated at one horsepower in distinction to the hundreds for modern Formula One racing cars.)
The hansom cab has figured prominently in an immense number stories and films including:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes stories,
Renditions of Jack the Ripper,
C. S. Lewiss The Chronicles of Narnia,
Robert Lewis Stevenss The Adventure of the Hansom Cab,
The tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,
The Seinfeld television episode, "The Rye." Kramer, minding a friend's Hansom Cab business, feeds canned meat to a horse, causing the animal to become severely flatulent. Subsequently, when George Constanza takes his fiancé on a ride to meet his future in-laws, the conditions become anything but a romantic horse-and-buggy experience for them.

Hello Bulent,
So...are you also a Seinfeld fan?! It is my favorite show, and I believe I could recite every episode by memory. :-) I often feel sorry for these carriage horses, but your capture is very colorful, and it shows the horse and carriage well. I remember that snowy and cold weekend, and it is nice to see some of the snow still clinging to the tree branches in the background.

Hi, Bulent!
Very attractive clean scene, lovely light on the trees, touches of red, good cropping. Beautiful curves of the coach. Patient horses and people. Unusual aspect - we are so used to seeing a picture like this 'going' from left to right.
Thanks, and enjoy the signs of spring,
Winifred

Hello Bulent, Almost a Dickensesque picture of the vehicle and the horse. Makes for a real winter landscape in the City. Great composition and color but maybe a bit of sorrow for the poor horse. Great place for pictures. I took many there years ago when I was working near Highland Falls up the road a piece. Have a good week. Roger

Hi Bulent,
I think it must be quite nice to take a ride in one of these carriages, and maybe one would feel as if being in a story. It looks like it was a cold day for a ride though. Nice scene.

Hello Dear Bulent,
We see everyday almost the same carriages in Bruges, specially for tourists, during a 30 minutes trip around Bruges as attraction.
Splendid picture with the snow as decoration in background, everyone in Belgium hope that come the springtime.
Very well composition, good presentation. TFS.
Thanks for your excellent note as usual.
Best regards,
John.

Hi Bulent
I like horse carriages a lot, so does my cousin in Germany, how actually breeds horses and participates in horse carriage competitions. I guess the one in your picture just do their job and do not go for competitions, or? I'm not so sure if I would use their services when it is so cold, except it would be in Davos or Arosa, two Swiss hill stations, where you can go around in horse carriages on snow. Nonetheless I like your shot a lot, well done
Thanks for your critique of my fish market shot. The sound you would like but why not the smell. Trust me, the smell in this market is o.k. If there is a strong smell in an Asian fish market, they will not be able to sell.
Best regards

Ciao dear Bulent,
a pleasant image that brings us in the ancient times of the last centuries. I won't speak of the perfect photographic quality because it is your constant, but I want to put in evidence your great culture. It's always a pleasure to read your notes, independently from the theme. Compliments, dear friend, I am proud of your friendship.

Good morning!
Nice sequel of the previous photo, quite interesting story of this carriage.
Snow... I'm so tired of it, it seems that this winter will never end.
And what the summer will bring to the world, I wonder?
Well anyway!

Dear Professor 'A'
Interesting to know that these horse drawn carriages also were patented! And after I read your note, I see ample reason why it was done. Interesting picture...could be from any era, except for the cap of the man in the BG

Hi Bulent, Good to see these horses with their winter coats on, looks chilly out there. Good crop to get the whole of one horse and cab in the frame. We saw these when having lunch at Micky Mantle's (the baseball legend) restaurant. All the waiters had red caps with Micky's no (8?). Another good addition to your NY winter series. TFS. Murray.

Hi Bulent,
This is classic Manhattan with a highly detailed view of the old style handsome cab with a lovely Central Park winter backdrop.
Can hear the loud clatter of hoofs on the streets of NYC or London's 19th century cobblestone with Holmes and Watson in hot pursuit of Professor Moriarty.
