Sevastopol is the largest town on the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. It is located on the Black Sea, at the same latitude as Bordeaux. The formerly closed city lies on the southwestern edge of the Crimea on the foothills of the Crimean mountains. It is the home port of the Russian Black Sea fleet. The population dbeträgt 400,000.

The Russian Navy with its Black Sea fleet is still the largest employer in the region and funded 25 percent of city budgets. Alone for the lease of the military port for the Russian Black Sea Fleet will pay several million dollars a year to Ukraine.
