Postcard from Skiathos, a photo from Magnisia, Thessaly

Photographer's Note

The "Apollon" and other small fishing boats anchored in the harbour of Skiathos town, Greece.

Skiathos is part of the group of islands known as the Sporades ("Scattered islands"), east of the Greek mainland. Sailing through that area you would sporadically reach an island.

During the summer season most people staying on Skiathos seem to be British and Nordic tourists. Now, as we have entered October, the season is officially over and the island is left to the few thousand locals, living mainly in the only town. The rest of the island is basically empty and closed.

The weather was rather dull this day. In the night and the morning it had been raining heavily. Now, at noontime, it was clearing up and I had taken the local bus into town to have lunch and take some pictures. By the time I got back to my village at the other end of the island the sun was once again shining brightly.

Hello Gert,
a very lovely view from the harbour of Skiathos. I like very much the combination of the moody colours of the cloudy day with the rich reds and the other bright touches here and there. I love the texture and green-grey tones on the sea. The atmosphere is quiet and romantic, the perspective of the quay and the clear view of the waterfront look very inviting. This quiet aspect can't be found in many postcards:) and I appreciate this and the two workshop pictures very much. Congratulations and thank you!

Everything is so similar on both sides of the Aegean sea ! On thumbnail I was thinking, somewhere on the West coast of Turkey.

nice to see these photo's from Greece, of the many different islands, it always intriques me.

perhaps not a picture perfect setting weather wise, but thats not in your control now is it.

What i do like is the red boat! out of all the Greece Marina photo's we have viewed in our lifetime, how often do you see a RED boat!

The weather seems not in your favour and rather flat, but it's good enough to register the interesting side of the busy looking harbour. A well thought out composition, perspective and depth lovely how the vivid red boat actually grabs attention as strong point and leads into the lively backdrop. I love that the detail on the fg and mid fg, as the sheen on the ripply water and its deep colour have beautifully counter balanced the dull sky and speck of vivid colours around help to boost the visual effect to strike the eyes. It's lovely that you also have managed to inject some other attractive elements to make this intriguing You've managed a good shot, despite the condition - well done, TFS.

Här saknas en värmande sol. Färgerna är inte så klara men det finns ändå ett överflöd av detaljer att studera. Extrabilderna är också bra. Att högerklicka på bilden tycks inte fungera på PC, men det går ju att se den större bilden i beta-versionen.

di questa foto mi piace in maniera particolare la composizione molto accurata con la diagonale della banchina portuale in grande evidenza con le sue bitte gialle e le case che fanno fa bel fondale.
Anche i colori, alquanto saturi, nonostante questa loro particolare caratteristica non disturbano, anzi essi aiutano a dare una certa vivacità alla composizione anche se il risultato appare non eccessivamente aderente alla realtà.
Ottima la nitidezza come si può facilmente rilevare da alcuni dettagli.

Hello Gert,
To some extent on this picture and much more on the altered image #2, Skiathos looks a very green island. Especially in comparison with the better known Cycladic Islands.
Your main picture has a good variety of colours: red and blue alternate nicely on the white boats and houses.
The touristic season is officially over and I have the impression that the weather isn't anymore like in full summer.
You captured here a picturesque small port with beautiful houses along the quay and with a church towering over the town.

Each of your shots is worthy of an individual post but I would have found it difficult to choose which one would be the main post.
I have never been to Greece as late in the season as this, so I have never experienced rain!
Greece is such a great place for a holiday with the prospect of the clear ocean, the warm weather, the attractive white and blue houses and tavernas and, of course, the friendly Greek people.
You have a good viewpoint for guidance and perspective, with vibrant colours to add interest. For an out-of-season place, there are plety of figures about, giving quite a busy atmosphere.

Hej Gert,
Grekland ligger mig varmt om hjärtat, jag har varit där fler gånger än jag minns. Anledningen är mycket pga av det vi ser på bilden. Avslappnad atmosfär vid hamnen, vitkalkade hus, fiskebåtar och en taverna inom räckhåll. Helt perfekt om man känner att man behöver ladda batterierna en stund. Lite trist ljus den här dagen som nämnt tidigare, men jag tycker ändå att du förmedlar "Greklandskänslan" bra här. Fin överblick över hamnen och en röd båt i förgrunden, bra!

Good daily life photo from Greece, but I am not sure that scene and cloudy sky could be attractive composition for a postcard, although I have never been on the Skiathos, probably this is one of the most interesting places there.
It reminds me some places on the Paxos Island near Corfu.

Hello Gert,

The light gives special mood to this composition with good saturated colors. I like the oblique line of the dock in front of the boats and the red one sure makes herself seen. I also appreciate the overall clarity.

well chosen the POV as we can see a section of the port with the fishing boats.I like the beautiful presentation with the red colour of the boat on the foreground to make the scene even more attractive.The waterfront creates depth and perspective in the image.

in spite of the grey and rainy day, you have reached a vivid colours and a good light level, in this capture in the port.
The fishing boats and the traditional architecture of the village provide a nice graphical and chromatic wealth in the ensemble, with a great image quality.
