Nostalgia, a photo from Naples, Campania

ENGLISH: "Nostalgia" means "homesickness" in Italian. The recent beautiful photo of Sorrento uploaded by our friend Valter Bayno here Valter's Surriento
has made me very homesick for Campania. So this is a photo of the Cloisters of San Francesco. It is a great place to escape the craziness of this touristic little town. The tranquillity and cool shade, together with their elegance is an experience not to be missed. The cloisters are attached to the rear of the Church of San Francesco and were built in the 14th Century. The style of the cloisters is an interesting mixture of pagan, Middle Ages and Gothic. This is a very popular place for marriages as it is situated right on the cliffs of Sorrento, near the Piazza Tasso.

ITALIANO: Dopo, la bella foto scaricato dal nostro amico Valter (Bayno)qui ieri, me l'ha dato troppo nostalgia: Valter's Surriento. Quindi, propongo questa foto dei chiostri di San Francesco. Il chiostro fu costruito nel quattordicessimo secolo nello stile mescolato tra pagano, medioevale e Gotico. É un luogo popolare per i matrimoni perche é situato vicino le rocce di Surriento e Piazza Tasso.

Just back today from a relaxing holiday in Mallorca so just catching up with critiques - and I see this!

Yes, I understand nostalgia and homesicknesss very well and can fully understand why you have posted this picture. And it is a fine one which well suits the transition to black and white: the contrasts and tones are well suited to the subject and the lines of the cloisters are well portrayed too in superb detail.

Excellent composition, perfect exposure and stunning details and sharpness.

It is a beautiful photograph ... but would liked to have seen the colours here - they would be 'real noltalgic colours' ... though we naturally expect b/w with nostalgic thinking.
The corner view of the old columns and the arches and the half-arches have excellent sharpness. The sun and shade on the portico / corridores impress the effect of nostalgia. We imagine the nostalgic happenings in those corridores and the now peaceful garden. The tall tree with its light brnches hanging, on the left enhances the balance of the composition.

conosco questo delizioso chiostro, proprio subito dopo l'entrata ha una scultura di un libro aperto, è una parte molto bella di Sorrento, la scelta del B&W la trovo molto appropriata, uno scatto nitido e con ottima profondità...con un perfetto uso degli ISO...
è vero il mix di questo chiostro è davvero interessante...spero che la mia foto non ti abbia fatto venire troppa tristezza...per farmi perdonare quando verrai in Italia ti offrirò un buon bicchiere di vino bianco in quel Dopolavoro così affascinante e inviteremo anche il nostro amico Rino che è lì a due passi...speriamo che lo abbiano ;)(il vino buono)

Wonderful photo from Sorrento and indeed nostalgic. Superb composition in black and white, beautiful atmosphere. Fantastic cloisters, it would be nice to see the flowers in colour too. Awesome shot with great sharpness.
My son is just in Naples, I am looking forward to seeing his photos.

Dear Lisa,
Why B&W? I am sure the place is more vivid under daylight and with colors.
The many details around this inner yard of the cloister, provide to my oppinion a multitude of colors.
Melancholy taken over... maybe.
Good view through the lavish veg.'s on the colonnato.
Enjoy ther coming weeek, add some colors...

this works so well in B&W and evokes the nostalgic mood that you are experiencing. Love the composition and the elegant symmetry of the arches just harmonises so beautifully with the vegetation. Can understand your longing for Italy.

Hey Lisa.
Another great shot with a cool and unique tree there on the left. The black and white treatment is a wonderful idea, as it gives a sombre feel to the cloisters, exactly as I imagine it would have been. A wonderful sense of seclusion ofered by the architecture and nature combined. A great place to sit and ponder the world I would image.

Ciao cara Lisa,
il senso di spazio e di profondita' insieme all' ottima nitidezza ci fanno pensare che ci troviamo in questo cortile e che possiamo fare un giro per godere la tranquilita' ed i motivi dell' elegante architettura. Allo stesso tempo le piante del primo piano ed il b&n ci tengono un po' fuori, cosi vicino e codi lontano di questo bel posto. E' questo il senso di nostalgia che percepisco dalla tua bella foto. L' assenza di gente permette un riferimento personale ad ogni spettatore. Una realizzazione meravigliosa, complimenti e grazie!

Bonsoir Lisa,
C'est une très belle présentation en noir et blanc de ce cloitre. La végétation adoucit les vieilles pierres et la lumière est parfaite.

quando si deve valorizzare un soggetto architettonico come questo antico chiostro di Sorrento, il B&W assolve questo compito in modo superbo, certo spetta al fotografo scegliere l'inquadratura migliore e gestire con maestria le luci, cose che hai fatto, come al solito egregiamente.

Spero che scelga la Sardegna per una piccola sosta il tuo prossimo viaggio.

don't get me wrong, i think its great that you have that love and passion for the culture, city and the people that mean so much to you living there.

Its a great location but thanks for excellent processing as it looks like you have respected the light levels with a vivid memory of how the scene looked. I lilke the composition too; Its a nice enough, classic and rustic ye oldie kind of picture full of characters. Everything in this image adds to the story depicting the time gone by and you've successfully captured an aspect of a proud location and its architecture but an excellent shot full of history. Well done, TFS.
