Photographer's Note

On the road between Sikasso (south-east of Mali) and Bobo-Dioulasso (south-west of Burkina), a few kilometres before the border.

The Sikasso area is crossed by a lot of rivers and knows a better level of wetness better than the rest of the country. Moreover, the soil is enough fertile. So, this green place is called the "breadbasket" of Mali. We cultivate here cereals, cotton and there are a lot of mango trees along the road.
In addition, Sikasso is the crossroads of 2 big roads : the one between Bamako and Bobo and the one between Bamako and Abidjan. So that, it's an important place of trade and industry.

This photo could have been taken everywhere in Africa : the road is not only designed to motor vehicles (exept some trucks we don't see a lot). It's also and particulary used by (motorized) bicycles, carts towed by donkeys and walkers, a lot of walkers. People can walk dozens of kilometres on the day (they have no choice), to go selling or buying some goods, to go to school, to go to the free clinic...

Yannis, this is a jump-off-the-page great shot. I looked at your gallery and I think it is the best in your body of work. Now past all the praise I like it on many levels, the compression of distance works well with the bg items soft of focus make the depth jump out. The vally that you shot into combined with the angle you shot the road is superb in drawing us into the shot and the colors add to the alive feeling. Overal great capture.

Like Greg have say i find this shot great because i cane not imageine other picture in my head about Africa and why disturb someone bit overexposes shot.Nowhere in Europe or North America you cane found this way of living.That way i found this photo very atractive from any angle and i call everybody to join this photo from Mali

ce qui "choque" le regard occidental sur cette photo, c'est de voir des gens en chair et en os sur une route, nombreux et qui ne sont pas des marginaux.
une route dont on peut imaginer qu'elle est aussi l'espace d'une certaine sociabilité (et d'une immense fatigue).
tu étais sur la route et t'y voici à nouveau.
