Elegance on water, a photo from Khulna, South

Photographer's Note

It is early morning and already busy at the boat jetty in Khulna, passengers coming and going to town and to one of the outlying islands.
Stepping on and off of the small boats is an art. You see children and elderly people skip down the stairs and step in without any difficulty or not needing to hold onto anything. During the journey people most stand correcting their balance in time with the boat easily and elegantly. So agile. I must admit I never learnt the art of getting on and off these small ferries, I was never so elegant.

Hello Elaine,
Very typical of Bangladesh. I guess Dutch people handle their bicycles just as easily as these people hop on and off such boats. Once again there are lots of faces to watch in a good monochrome photo.
I had to use one like this when a railway bridge had been blown up in the war and there was no other way of getting across the river. I think someone helped me with my backpack.

A good and interesting shot. It works very well in black and white. Lots of characters on board with many stories to tell I imagine.

Hello Elaine,
This is a bit like how I imagine Bangladesh: a lot of water, a lot of boats and usually they're full of passengers.
With the many women in the boat I wonder how this picture (and their clothes) would have looked like on a colour photo.

Hello Elaine,

You have supplied interesting, informative notes to accompany this fine b&w photograph.
I suppose that having experienced these journeys from an early age, the population is used to the swaying of the boat, as well as the ascending and descending. I used to marvel at people hopping on and off the back-loading buses with poles, not something you see nowadays!
I love the clarity of the people against the hazy b/g.
