Tiger's Nest Dzong, a photo from Paro, West

Photographer's Note

Taktshang is the most famous monastery in Bhutan. It hangs on a cliff some 700 meters (2,300 feet) above the bottom of Paro valley.
The name means "Tiger's nest", the legend being that Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) flew there on the back of a tiger. The monastery includes seven temples which can all be visited. The monastery suffered several blazes and is a recent restoration. It requires a considerable climb to reach, although it is possible to go on horseback to a viewpoint lower down.

This has to be the archetype monastery of the world! What an incredible place, and your perspective above the monastery adds to the vertigo inducing sense of place among the high Himalaya. Well done!

This is a nice scenic view of the Taktshang with great pov and composition. Great light condition to have this shot.

How long would it take you trekking to reach 700m here?

Hi Alan, this site is perhaps the most fascinating in the world or at least the "little world i've seen through TE's window" :)
First time when i saw that marvel i couldn't believe my eyes it was true and for real (i guess i still have the picture i'm refering in my favs picture) ... and yes it is.
A vantage POV you got there to put in evidence the beauty of this site, amazing to imagine how they built it !
Beautiful shot, i would be glad to have it in my collection :)

Truly is a spectacular place to be. You have captured the serenity of the surrounding. It’s one of the places I wish to visit one day. Thank for the including the legendary story behind it. I have been to Tibet and have seen many monasteries, this one look more impressive than any I’ve seen. I guess partly because it's situated on a cliff and its natural backdrop. Thank for Sharing. Looking forward to see more of you photos.

Very impressive one. I like very much how the prayer flags taken by the wind are really floting up in the air over the monastery. Also you have a really great POV with this big void on the right. I've been numerous times to Bhutan during the last few years including a couple of times to Taktsang. Definitely a wonderful place.

after looking at these photos from bhutan, i'm feeling nostalgic 'coz i spent my childhood in Bhutan. I was in wangdi Phodrang till 1995.
