‘Bandar Seri Begawan - Baobabs for Brunei’

After posting my previous photo I found more information about the park.
(What I did not find out in Brunei, I now found on the internet)

The park between the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Brunei River is called ‘Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas’ (literally 'Golden Jubilee Crown Park').
The construction of the park began in January 2016 and it was inaugurated on 22 October 2017 (in conjunction with the golden jubilee of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's accession to the throne).

As I mentioned in my previous note, there used to be a water village here, part of the larger Kampong Ayer.
The development of the park caused the relocation of some 500 residents from the water village. That part of Kampong Ayer has ceased to exist.
The project has caused an increased concern on the vitality and even existence of the Kampong Ayer community.
On the one hand there’s emigration from the water village to the land. On the other hand, new residential areas are also being built in Kampong Ayer (on the other side of the river) that are very much in demand.
The latter may be a compensation from the government to the residents of the water village ... You can imagine that whoever loses his home in the water village is not immediately very happy with the park, no matter how beautifully it is designed.

One of the attractions for the Bruneians are the boababs (adansonias) in the park.

There are nine different baobab species in the world. Six of them originate in Madagascar, two on the African continent and the Gulf Peninsular, and one in Australia.

Nine baobab trees in the park have been imported from Australia.
They’re all 70 years old. Not yet old for these trees as they can live up to 1.000 years.
So the Bruneians can therefore admire baobabs for about another 930 years in their new park :)

The baobab thrives well in the hot climate.
The trees bear large white flowers between the month of December and May.
However, not when I was there in March …
