‘Bandar Seri Begawan - Bruneians like kite flying’
China is often regarded as the birthplace of kites.
The first official kites appear around 400 BC in China, but there are indications that the kite was invented there already 600 years earlier. This has a lot to do with the fact that silk and bamboo were available in China, the ideal materials for a good kite.
However, the oldest depiction of a kite is from a mesolithic period cave painting in Pulau Muna, an island near Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. That depiction has been dated from even much older, namely from about 9500–9000 years BC.
Kite flying is very popular in many Asian countries. Even in Afghanistan. However, the Taliban thought it didn't fit their culture and banned it when they held power between 1996 and 2001…
All information from Wikipedia.
As you can see in both pictures, kite flying is also popular in Brunei. However, it struck me that most of the young people with a kite were Chinese Bruneians. Most of them, not all of them.
……
Last year, Mariusz reported that he had a full TE-page with pictures taken in Athens.
18 photos of him without anyone else uploading a photo of Athens in between.
I now also have a full TE-page with pictures of Bandar Seri Begawan.
I admit that this is of course much easier to achieve by showing pictures of a less frequented place.
It also has to do with the declining popularity of TE as my first photo in this series was uploaded on April 28, 2020 and my 18th is today.
You can find them all here:
https://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Brunei/West/Brunei_and_Muara/Bandar_Seri_Begawan/
As soon as someone will upload another photo of BSB, this link will of course no longer show only my photos. I hope it will happen soon and that TE regains popularity.
I hope you found the photos worthwhile. In this series, golden domes and walkways in water villages came into the picture quite often.

Goedenavond Paul,

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your latest critique.
Some years ago there was a bestselling book by Khaled Hosseini called The Kite Runner, about kite flying in Afghanistan. However, I never saw this game on any of my visits. And I am sure I didn't see it in Brunei either. These two photos are both very nice, even though the WS doesn't have such strong focal points as this. Mosque, photo frame, clearly visible persons in the foreground. There's a good light from a good angle.

I found that I have some unpublished photos from Brunei. They are not really bad as photos but badly scanned. Maybe it could be worth the while to dig them up to make new scans to make you feel less lonely on that page. ;-)
Have a nice weekend,
Gert

Hello Paul,
Here we have a full view with sights you've shown us before: the mosque, the large picture frame, and the park. In this scene you've added kites, too. :-) It's a pretty view. Take care!

Hallo Paul,

Hello Paul,
Ha!ha!ha! Do you think I'm one of them ?
Well, seeing this kite-flying ... reminder me when I was very young with this crazy hobby. Those days I made a kite myself. All I need was , a piece of paper and spool of thread. Satisfied with so-called 'Kite' shaped, all I've to do was ... waiting for the strong winds :-)
Again , a beautiful scene with the mosque as backdrop and the picture 'selfie' frame. Of course the colourful kites 'gliding' in the sky as light as the feathers.
I do like the WS more. I see more kites and activities. The stunning bridge with the hills ... and the open spaces ... it's so blissful to see.
Thanks for sharing this crazy 'Hobby' I once had.
Loong
p/s: I reckon that I'm also the only one uploading photos of Breda :-)

Hello Paul,
The large playground park with the mosque on the background, wonderfully under bright daylight. Vividly presented the outdoor's activity.
Wish you a nice weekend,

Hi Paul
I was shocked when yesterday I believe it counted only 17 or 18 photos were uploaded...all day...that's pretty bad! I'm not too confident on TE's future because most of its members are 50 years or older...and very few young people to keep it going...its only a matter of time. On a more positive note....lets enjoy this photo :) love the pulled back view with the photogenic architecture, the large frame, the people playing, and of course the kites. who wouldn't love this. excellent shot. Cheers

Hello Paul.
The amplitudes around the mosque are considerable, on the one hand the gardens, here we see a wide area where people have their recreation, we see the huge frame that you used in another previous photo, I suppose that people stand in the corner, like I remember.
The WS photo confirms the amount of space in the area.
A magnificent color, which gives the image a lot of chromatic richness.
Excellent clear and bright capture.
Well done. I like it.
Have a nice day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hi Paul,it's a normal day there, but it seems the day show of kites flying,a lot in the sky in this magical composition with the mosque in background, very useful opposite view in the WS too. Have a nice week and thanks,Luciano

Hello Paul We know this mosque very well now, I see here also this big frame. The nice scene on the big grass area, In the main picture there are only two kites. In Paje, in Zanzibar, there were many kites but the types for surfing. To have a whole page of your own is not difficult especially with such low activity. And how many pages Paja has!
Excellent composition.
Best regards MAlgo

Hi Paul,
I think I can recognize not only the mosque but also the huge frame there.
Nice wide capture, it makes it feel as if the structure was built in the middle of nowhere.
Lovely weather allowed you to take so many attractive photos there.
Excellent reportage...
and I have managed to catch up with all your newest uploads :)

Hello Paul,
The giant picture frame at right is a popular attraction in this open park. The gold domes of the bg mosque contrast well with the blue sky. Tfs!

Dag Paul,
