Panjiayuan is located in Beijing's southeast corner. It has existed for years. I used to come here in the early 90's. Then it lived up to it's name. Items were real antiques or often just interesting and old. The term Ghost was applied when it was believed that owners of the items were long past. Something over one hundred years in age had no living original owner. Thus they are all ghosts. The name stuck, at least for some of us. Today it is often called the flee market and with that name has lost some of it's charm.

Pictured here is just about 1/50 of the market. Items are layed out and customers bargain for each. Today the prices asked are very high, but the price one can get is still reasonable if you bargain hard. It is a fun game and sometimes it is the game that is enjoyed not the sale. How much can I get this person down - how much can I get that person to pay. Since I come here often, I have now many friends. I have found buying and giving a little icecream can get me the best buys.
