Photographer's Note

I SHOT IT AT GANGASAGAR MELA(FAIR).FOCAL LENGTH=35MM.
Gangasagar Mela is the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal(INDIA). This fair is held where the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal form a nexus. Hence the name Gangasagar Mela. This festival is celebrated during January every year and is a major attraction for millions of piligrams from all over India.
The pilgrims come for a holy dip on Makar Sankranti (last day of the Bengali Month) Negha -Mid January. They take dips in the Ganges and offer water to the Sun God. The dip, as they say, purifies their 'self' and according to them, 'punya' can be obtained thus. When they are done with the ritual obligations, they head towards the Kapilmuni Temple situated nearby, to worship the deity as a mark of respect.
The distance between temple and sea is almost two kilometers…In this shot some of those pilgrims cover this distance by this way ,those who fulfilled their wish by the god…and this is called DHANDEE.

I wonder how you select subjects for photography in a big mela. This one is really good. You always chose right POV and composition happens to be excellent.

Hello Subir,
A superb shot of the prostrating pilgrims. The slightly tilted line-up works well. Timing is excellent with one pilgrim face down while the other is heading up. Contrast is quite striking too, owing to the reddish skirt. Regards,

Hello Subir,

You have captured some wonderful shots in the Gangasagar mela. This one is also beautiful, showing the faith, devotion and mental strength of men and women. The pov is wonderful. Your thought on keeping the hand on the right corner is also well understood. overall a photo with great documentary value as well as great aesthetics.

At first glance I did not like the idea of the hand on the top right...But looking at your discussion & your point, I agree with you. A very good composition, from your high POV, where you've kept the subjects in a slight diagonal. The visual appeal increases thanks to the pink petticoat. A very strong picture Subir!
