Photographer's Note
I SHOOT IT IN PURULIA(WEST BENGAL.INDIA)with135MM. THESE BOYS ARE BELONG TO "KHERIA SABAR TRIBAL COMMUNITY".In West Bengal's Purulia District, is a settlement of Kheria Sabars, a tribe we once called "criminal." And after all, every Sabar is often viewed with suspicion. It told that villagers in general believe that [Sabars] do not have human feelings like a normal man", that they are "born criminals [who] commit all sorts of crime.
The social category generally known as the Denotified and Nomadic tribes of India covers a population approximately of six crores. Some of them are included in the list of Scheduled castes, some others in the Scheduled Castes, some others in the Scheduled Tribes, and quite a few in Other Backward Classes. But there are many of these tribes which find place in none of the above. What is common to all these Denotified and Nomadic Tribes (DNTs) is the fate of being branded as 'born' criminals.
Paschim Banga Kheria Sabar Kalyan Samiti in nearby Rajnowagarh(purulia). The Samiti has been working with the Sabars for about 30 years. It owes its existence to the vision and energy of Gopi Ballava Singha Deo, from a once royal family in this area. The results of the Samiti's efforts are noticeable among the Sabars.
Jnanpeeth-Magsaysay award winner Mahasweta Devi also involved to improve the life style of "kheria sabar".

Subir,
The usage of B&W white here is haunting...
The boys eyes, body language all artulate the idea very well...
Great stuff...

Very graphic picture of this society. The children as always suffer the most. Such fragile lives shattered by injustice and poverty. Your portrait is powerful to touch the senses. It contains elements that make this scene and moment unforgettable. Well done Subir.
