Photographer's Note

A welcoming host. Hemis-Shukpachu, Ladakh.

This is TT Namgail, the owner of the Toro guest house in Hemis-Shukpachu. I can't remember how many languages he spoke, but it was a lot - something like 5 or 6. He was a great host and showed us around the village, taking us to the family flour mill that you can see here, and also to a magnificent water-powered prayer wheel. He was very knowledgeable about the area and about Ladakhi life, society and history in general; a very interesting chap.
We all spent a great evening watching the cricket world cup on the flickering TV set that you can see in the background, drinking a strange alcoholic beverage not dissimilar to Nepalese chang (can't remember what the Ladakhis call it).
If you're ever in the area, pay him a visit!
