Leopard, a photo from Sikkim, Northeast

Photographer's Note

That common leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) was photographed at the Himalayan park, a semi captive zoo in Gangtok. This is the Indian subspecies, 9 common leopard subspecies are recognised by the iucn. The word leopard is mainly used to designate the African subspecies where as panther is used to call the Asian ones, they are synonym. A significant immediate threat to wild panther populations is the illegal trade in poached skins and body parts. Human–leopard conflict situations have increased in recent years. Because of their habitat loss and the decrease of wild preys, leopards approach human settlements, where they are tempted to eat goats, dogs, poultry, cats, pigs and sheeps

Bonjour Gueguel,

On dirait qu'il n'y a pas de barrière entre toi et lui. Il est très impressionnant et je n'aimerais certainement pas me retrouver face à face avec lui. L'image est d'une superbe netteté.

Hi Miguel,
That is amazing animal, and it looks very natural. I am not familiar with semi captive zoos, this seems very natural. I met a leopard once in south Africa, they are really beautiful. And huge!

Bonjour Gueguel,

The leopard stands out well against the green grass but no doubt would be harder to spot in an arid environment with dead grass. Making its prey less safe! Good sharpness and excellent color and saturation. Tfs.
