Photographer's Note

My first post from Ladakh - the picture was taken from from the window of the Guesthouse where we stayed in Leh. The first day we reached Leh, was spent acclimatizing for the altitude difference…Leh is situated at 3505m (10500 ft), as compared to sea level altitude of Mumbai

Namgyal Tsemo Gompa was founded in the early 15th century, around the year 1430. It stands atop the crag behind Leh palace, having a full view of the town of Leh. The Namgyal Tsemo Gompa of Ladakh was founded by King Tashi Namgyal and has been named after him only. It boasts of a rich collection of some ancient manuscripts and wall paintings.

One of the most treasured possessions of the monastery is a three-story high solid gold idol of Maitrieya Buddha (future Buddha, also known as the laughing Buddha). Namgyal Tsemo Monastery of Leh Ladakh also houses a statue of Avaloketesvara and Manjushri, approximately one story high. Near the monastery is an old fort, which, because of neglect, lies mostly in ruins now.

Hi Angshuman,
The light is perfectly landing on the gompa like a theatre spotlight. I love the layers of the mountains in different shades, and the brooding sky together with the light adds a dramatic flair. Love the detail of the zig-zagging path up the mountain too.

The play of light and shadow is very nice!
The sharp ridges and the path we are seeing is the most impressive aspects of composition. I love the cloudy background because objects very well in the foreground. It is clear that the depth of field is excellent!

Not a bad view from a guesthouse. To me the most striking feature of this photo is the contrast between the shaded nearest mountain ridge and the sunlit hills behind it. The dark sky makes the white and red and golden buildings of the gompa shine brightly. This is truly an amazing sight.

Amazing scenery and you have captured it beautifully. The first ridge in shadow with the lit one behind gives a dramatic effect. How wonderful to have the sun falling on the monastery - the touch of red in the cluster of buildings is very nice and the zig zag path wonderful. What an incredible visit you must have had.

Another fascinating trip...
This time the low sun before sunset created and intriguing shade which makes the illuminated parts stand out better. I love that dark and well defined ridge of the mountain which contrasts with the other one behind. Also the sky contributes to this contrast and the red colour of that building makes a fine focal point. Well composed and very fine.

(It sounded strange not to see your pictures for a while... so that's why I decided to write you a message. Thanks for your answer.)

Majestic view, a very picturesque shot and one of the most visually appealing of the mountain monastery. Outstanding image, the monastery just poping out on top on the slope like something out of a fairy tale with a fascinating history of a very unique place. I really like the view point and interesting perspective with the greens have been brought out beuatiffuly in the shadow area, but what so impressive is the way it shows the landscape in layers of distance. The warm evening light hitting the distant mountain is fabulous and the colours are really tranquil. The vivid red just adds that extra dimension with the contrasting splash off colour just at the right spot drawing the eyes into the scene and thru the image. The grey sky blends in the environment superbly. This picture has a serene calm about it, in beautiful tones, great light, shades and shadows. Fantastic shot worth the effort, top quality again. The zig-zagging road is an amazing entrance to that rather spectacular location!
I guess the idea that they should separate from the profane world was overriding in the choice of lot...
The play of light adds interest value to this eye-catching composition!

A beautiful pictureof this splendid landscape with mixt of light and shadows. We were here in August 2010 to do a treck but it was a storm with mudslide and the treck has been cancelled. I think this pic has been taken from the stupa.Nice shot.

the game of chiaroscuro is fantastic, and it create a really attractive atmosphere on the impressive landscape of high mountains.
The Monastery placed in the edge of the mountain in foreground is a great eye-catcher, the sunlight that illuminates partially the landscape provides a few beautiful warm tonalities, and the image is very sharp.

I like very much the effect which you achieved having this foreground covered in shade. The curve made by the closer hill is very attractive. Very subtle sift colors and great exposition in spite of the strong light and shadows.

Another beautiful photo. Thought the light are not even, but you managed to get really nice details. Here I like most is the way the light illuminated parts of the mountain and especially on the monastery, that brings our eyes toward it and the little path that take us up there. Good shot.

Hello Angshuman-san,

It is rare to see a naturally dramatic lighting as in this image. FG is covered with shadow. Namgyal Tsemo Gompa as you call the monastery is in the spotlight, an ideal lighting for this shot. The clarity of the air can be felt. I am learning though your images as well as your informative note. Thank you Angshuman-san for this wonderful image.
