Brooding Sky, a photo from Jammu and Kashmir, North

Photographer's Note

Tsomoriri or Lake Moriri (official name: Tsomoriri Wetland Conservation Reserve), is lake in the Changthang (literally: northern plains) area in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. The lake is at an altitude of 4,595 m (15,075 ft); it is the largest of the high altitude lakes in the Trans-Himalayan biogeographic region, entirely within India. Oriented roughly in a north-south direction the lake measures nearly 20 km in length and is about 8 km at its widest. The lake is fed by springs and snow-melt from mountains on the Changthang plateau. Water enters the lake in two major stream systems, one entering the lake from the north, the other from the southwest. Both stream systems create extensive marshes where they enter the lake. It formerly had an outlet to the south, but this has become blocked and the lake has become land locked. As a result, the water is now becoming saline.

The area is characterised by Arctic conditions, wind-swept desert and barren hills. The soil is mostly sandy. The lake shore supports vegetation which largely consists of grasses on the plains away from the lake and reeds and sedges on the lake edges. The lake itself lies in meditative repose, its surface rippling gently in response to the wind. I sat down on the ground and marvelled at the blue of the lake waters - almost magical, shifting constantly in response to the game of hide and seek played by the clouds and the sun. The mountains on the far shore of the lake are of variegated colours, largely browns and mottled green, their stolidity broken by occasional flashes of purple and violet accentuated by the dark sky. The lake is a thin slice of deep blue in the centre of the frame...this was the northern end of Tso Moriri.

The clouds soon burst into snowfall on the peaks while the sun continued to shine in the FG..A spectacle made in heaven...truly!

We are almost neighbours today. Wonderful view of Ladakh. Amazing lake or saline in strange colours. Beautiful barren hills, no wonder at so high altitude. And sky is also dramatic. What a fascinating place! There are still so much for me to see in India.

A very, very nice landscape shot: the mountains with a lot of graduated colors from the stones, the stormy sky, the pattern of shadows from the clouds and the good composition with the piece of vegetation filling the foreground and giving depth on the shot.

queste tue foto non lasciano indifferenti per la forte espressività che esse trasmettono.
Sono paesaggi dai caratteri aspri, ed anche per questo più belli soprattutto per noi occidentali poco avvezzi a simili spettacoli naturali.
Una ottima ripresa ed una postproduzione eccellente hanno poi valorizzato ulteriormente la foto che si pregia anche di una composizione e di un contrasto eccellenti.

spectacular landscape! It reminds me a bit the Death Valley in California. Fantastic flat foreground with well thought through bush asymmetrically positioned here. Wow, this is such a dramatic, brooding landscape. I love the dark grey sky, the moving clouds and the play of light and shade on the landscape. A small matter of personal taste, but this photo is quite beautiful on its own and has no need of the heavy black frame which in my humble opinion competes with it. But this is a small thing and the photo is stunning A++.

After all, rather similar to the Argentina Noroeste in its colors and contrasts and about the same altitude. You should give it a chance, you'd like it

A dramatic landscape with the magnificent mountains making a superb backdrop. Good sharpness and I like the warm cold color contrast between the blue grey sky and soft yellow sunlit fg and reddish tinged peaks. The clump of vegetation in th fg adds depth. Excellent density & saturation. Tfs!
