Korzok on the Tso Moriri, a photo from Jammu and Kashmir, North

Photographer's Note

At an altitude of 4,595m (15,075 ft) in the Himalayas, not too far from the Tibetan border, sits the lake of Tso-Moriri, a large and mind-bogglingly beautiful teardrop of melted Himalayan snow.

A calm expanse of water 19km (12 mi) long, 3km (1.9 mi) wide and barely 40m (130 ft) deep, Tso-Moriri is the centrepiece of the Rupshu valley which cradles the lake in mountains six kilometres (20,000 ft) high.

On the other side of the lake as you see in this picture, is Korzok - a small village in the northwest end of the Tso Moriri Lake. Most of the inhabitants of the Korzok are changpa nomads. At an altitude of 4595 m, Korzok is one of the India’s highest permanent villages. During the summers Changpas camp at various places in their robos (small tents) and look after their flock. Their sheep produce the famous pashmina, one of the costliest varieties of wool. Traditional weavers from Kashmir and Himachal buy this wool. The recent boom in its value has led to their prosperity, though that is not evident in their life-style. Korzok meaning is “Middle of the mountain” and it’s an excellent location to enjoy the lake side.

Korzok Village cuts off the civilization for about 8 months in a year due to snow. The only way of getting around in winter is on foot or horseback. The climate at Korzok is cold arid, snow falls in winter, rain fall is very less, there is a wide variation in temperature, during summer it rises as high as up to 36 degree Celsius but same falls to 5 degree Celsius at night. Very harsh climate to live in…yet people choose to stay there.

Hello Angshuman,
It's hard for a city person to imagine life in a desolate place like this, but maybe the changpa are quite comfortable. Anyway they only know their traditional way of life. This is another mind-blowing scenery with lovely tones of brown and green of the sparse vegetation and the calm surface of the dark blue lake.

The distance between thw two shore is giving depth to the composition. It is well divided, the sky, the mountainsd and the lake. The point of view is showing the details of the mountains. Have a nice dya.

You managed to capture the beauty of this scenery very well. The foreground reflection adds a lot to the composition, and your point of view emphasizes the depth of this valley against the mountains with their interplay of light and shadows. The sky makes the photo very atmospheric, and the mountain colours are blended in so beautifully. A gorgeous landscape.

Tso-Moriri must be one of the highest lakes in the world, I believe.
The puddle on the foreground isn't big but you looked for the right spot where the snowcapped peaks are reflected.
Wonderful alternation of light and shadow on the mountain slopes.

Hello Angshuman,

The snowcapped peaks in the distance make a majestic backdrop. Good sharpness and superb density levels with punchy light contrasts and impeccable color tones and saturation. I know from visits to the high altitude areas of Nepal that the sky really is this intense colour of blue. Nice fg reflections in the fg puddle in the river gravel. Tfs!

yes, you know you're at a high altitude when there's snow at the peaks even in June, just like this one.

for me, its all about the cloud coverage.
take away these clouds, and the photo just wouldn't have the same visual impact. That's not to say it still wouldn't look attractive, its just better this way.

and its cool to be able to catch a tiny bit of reflection in the lower fg.

its nice to see the frame is full, no dead or negative spaces left. beauty!

beautiful spot. Great light added an extra bonus of play of shadows on the surface of the mountain. Very good processing which has emphasized the subtle colors and the texture of the mountains. Nice to have the little reflection in the foreground. Very good idea, although having it closer if possible cold maybe make its effect more striking.

Great capture - stunning detail confirmed if looked at in large version, perfect exposure, great contrasting layer of colours of this high altitude lake view which also gives the viewer a sense of the expansive depth. I think the stunning turquoise water glues as strong anchor point leading the whole outstanding capture, so no wonder this is reaching high numbers of clicks. A delightful shot and tx for sharing. Beautiful view of mountains landscape behind the lake. Though the photo was taken in June still don't see green grass probably because high altitude. You even get some reflection in the puddle of the water. Great quality and informative note.
