Photographer's Note

The preparation for the puja season in our part of the world starts pretty early, mostly because of the demand for the huge number of clay idols, and also the weather, with 4 months of rain preceeding the season of celebration. Traditionally, the work of idol making used to start after Ratha yatra, but with time and increasing demand, the artisans have started working on the idols from about a month before that.

This is a half-done ipece of the idol of goddess Durga (with ten hands) and the demon Mahisasura (in foreground). The stage that this particular idol is in, indicates that it would undergo another coating of clay before the first layers of paint are put on, followed by the dress and decorating ornaments.
