Borobudur after Sunrise, a photo from Jawa Tengah, Java

Photographer's Note

Misty morning on Borobudur, after sunrise. Some silhouetted stupas and the misty coconut trees below. Borobudur is compared to Angkor and Bagan complexes in tourist literure, but it is not nearly as extensive or impressive. It's nice enough, but not spectacular.

Constructed in the 9th Century, it has 432 Buddha images, and 8432 tourists on its terraces and stupas, even before the site is open.

I wish I knew the secret of your genius, Tan.All you pictures seem to be masterpieces. This one of
Borobudur, is wonderful. The msity, morning light gives you a wonderful layered effect of filtering light, which is rich in atmosphere. Regards kevin

Certainly a fantastic captures with strong blacks and the mist gives of such a strong mood. The tones also are pretty spectacular, wonderful image Tan.

Lovely image! I love the layers of light that give the trees a lot of depth. The silhouettes of the buildings in the foreground is very effective. Nice work.

Hi Tan,
Beautiful atmosphere that you've captured here. I really like the different gradients of colors and the silhouettes of the trees. The stupas also make a good foreground subject and give a clear indication of where the photo was taken.

Wonderfull scene, masterly captured. Almost unicolor and great graphism. Another good reminder to the philosophi of chinese ink paintings; less color and lines but high impression.

the silhouettes are completely black, but it is just ok as the are not so big in the foregroud.

Bonjour Tan,
magninifique, mystique et magique cette ambiance brumeuse du bout du monde. Ces iles volcaniques qui me fascinent depuis si longtemps sont remplies de merveilles et d'histoire.
Une photo pas facile, car il fallait rendre la beauté et le naturel du moment, mais tu y es arrivé avec talent.

Wonderful mood you captured here. Getting up early always gives you best light before the busloads arrive. Love the details in this mist with the palmtrees in different layers spread out all the way to the far background....very nice.

Most definitely original POV of this famous place. Love the multilayers of landscape within the mist and fog. It really give the essence of the tropical feeling. Really great dof with visibility into the distant jungle within all the mist. The silhoutte of the monument is a little bit overwelming but without it would just be a tropical forest. I would have choose to have it for a good composition and the essense of the Borobudur. Thanks Tan.

Well it does just look magic and wonderful to the point that it seems out of this world, in fact it seems straight out of some ancient chinese artwork given that number of small contrasting touches everywhere, I like it a lot !

Yes, this is the one I so much liked Tan! The diagonal of the sunrays, the solid silhouettes in the FG & the fading of the trees in the BG to shades of pastel. This is magic...pure & simple!

The temple might not be impressive but the image is surely exquisite. Once again, waking up early paid off. The tops of the palm trees poking out of the mist and the warm sunrise colors, which must have been difficult to reproduce accurately on the screen, are beautiful. The tree on the right bothers me a bit, but it's not a major flaw. Excellent contrast between the hard rock of the temple and the soft background.

I remember seeing this on flickr although I think I commented on another version with no foreground. Excellent composition with the silhouettes and the dreamy light.

I was thinking about what to write when I saw Kevin's note. I couldn't agree more with what he wrote. It's a wonderful, magic, mystical image, whose atmosphere fits perfectly the fabled idea I have of that place.
