Photographer's Note

When I was in Lombok I drove by a Chinese Graveyard. This graveyard was beautiful, so I had to stop to take a closer look. It was so clean and the stones were really well maintained (I think they repainted the stones every couple of years). It looked like all the families put a lot of effort in mainting the graves of their beloved.
And between all these stones and graves, some kids were playing with their bikes. They raced again each other, talked and what really striked me was that they did not mind to play at a graveyard. Such a difference with Holland. You will never see this here, little children playing at a graveyard. Also probably because we grow up with the idea that death, graves and going to die is something scary. Something you dont want to think of, let alone play at a place which reminds you that everyone is mortal.
But here in Indonesia, Lombok and especially Toraja, the people are coping with dead in a much more natural way, without fear. I had the idea that they dont have the same scary image of dying as we European people have. And these kids were the living prove of that.

Merry Christmas everyone ;)
