Photographer's Note
Nothing special from nowhere special.
All I know is that this is also from Lombok island in Indonesia, but I don't know more precisely where it was taken. Possibly in the east coast town also called Lombok while I was looking for a minibus to take me back across the island to the west coast, where I was staying.
Or it could have been somewhere else. Who knows, and who cares?
This time I was not completely satisfied with the colours, so I made a copy which I converted to B&W. Then I hesitated back and forth a few times before I decided to post the colour version anyway. But for those two or three of you who always prefer monochrome photos I sent the B&W version to the workshop. Please have a look at it.
In any case this photo from early September 1976 was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Hello Gert, ‘nothing special from nowhere special’?
Always special, you have recorded a moment in time that can never be repeated.
I prefer the colour version. Interesting to see the horse drawn wagons/ carts.
The shops are obviously there for the local people, who nicely animate the scene.
Once again another excellent scan.
Keep them coming!
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Gert
I think I prefer the colour version. There is enough bright eye catching colour (red, blue, green, brown etc) plus colour does justice to the batik designs of the sarongs. Good tonal range in the b&w shot though. Tfs!

Hi Gert,
You have captured well a daily life scene. The point of view is showing the details of the houses and of the carts. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Gert,
It is sometimes a problem deciding which photograph to place as the main one but, if you post a w/s as well, people can make their own judgements; and because we are individuals, no matter which you choose, some will usually prefer the opposite one!
I will admit, I like the w/s better because, like you, I was a little unhappy with the colours - only a little!
It is a fine, journalistic photograph, recording succinctly how people dressed, how they travelled and where they shopped. The condition of the road is also clearly recorded, though for horse power, I think it would be kinder than a hard-surfaced road.
It is a well composed photograph, anchored strongly, with a fine sense of depth and good links between the various people and features.
Thanks for sharing this, Bev :-)

gert
colors aren't so bad, but the version in B&W is more artistic and beautiful I guess. nice details of the daily life in that area in those days, probably they don't use more the same clothes usually, in special men, who have social permission to be free and use what they want.. but in this image they use western shirts, I guess the sarongs are more confortable for the masculine tools. haha
take care

Hi Gert.
A photo with the environment in this Indian city in its day to day where people dedicate themselves each to their chores, typical these horse-drawn carts.
Colorful, sharpness and luminosity are captured effectively.
Very good composition.
Have a good weekend.
Warm greetings.
Luis.

Hello Gert,
Interesting dialy life scene from Lombok.
Picture with good composition and good quality.
I like the color photo more than the black and white photo in the workshop, these colors are gorgeous.
Fine presentation.

Hi Gert, the colors are perhaps a little strong but still quite natural, as opposed to many other nasty surprises that I had with the film. As I already said, in my opinion those from Lombok are your best photos regarding colors. Beautiful scene of everyday life .. I don't like black and white in general so the main photo is better. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Gert,
I usually have a weakness for colours.
But I admit the black and white version here is extremely beautiful.
In your main photo, I think the blue is a bit exaggerated. The other colours are fine to me.
It's a great daily life-scene and nobody seems to notice you.
Did you find the costumes of the local population very different between Bali and Lombok? It is possible that the Muslim ladies from Lombok were dressed differently than the Hindu ladies in Bali. But in my memory, I don't really remember the men of Bali wearing a longyi ... or I must have forgotten it.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Gert
Both are just good old street photos. In a way I think I like the B&W version better as the colour, as often happens with old scans isn't perfect although it is quite reasonable. I often go to B&W if I'm not happy with the colour.
cheers

Hello Gert, Nice photo. People look similar like I have seen them now, but I haven't seen such carts with horses. Maybe all now use the motorbikes. These carts are as colourful as the ones that Paul has shown. I prefer the colour version although the blue tint is a bit disturbing - especially the blue horse's legs. I tried to remove it but with no success. anyway. Excellent shot, great sharpness and composition.
Best regards MAlgo

Hej Gert,
Et meget godt indtryk af dagligdagen i byen. Husene danner en god baggrund og livet med flere mennesker, farverige vogne og en hest er meget godt spredt ud over kompositionen.

Dear Gert,
I have to admit that this time I like the colour version better! The colours give some extra to the photo this time! They make the people and the carts pop-out of the rather dull and filthy environment. A nice result from the Kodachrome again.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hi Gert
I'm not sure if you are including me in the "two or three of you who always prefer monochrome but on this occasion colour definitely gets my thumbs up. Don't get me wrong, the black and white photo is very good but it's the vivid colours that bring this street scene to life for me. I love the contrast between the red wheel/rainbow colour cart on the right and the blue wheel/blue cart/blue clothes on the left. Also the person wearing red who enters the blue building through a blue door. Other than that, there is lots of other things to look at, for example the ladies carrying baskets on their heads.
And yes, who cares where it is, as long as it's a great photo?
Best wishes
Kasia
