Photographer's Note

River life;

While running around in a small canoe scouting out the waterways of Martapura River, I came across this quiet scene along row of houses of stilt. She obviously caught my attention and indeed hard to ignore with her blinding red dress and the distinctive big hat or tanggui' worn only by local Banjarese woman to protect from direct sunlight. A small river vendor attending to her customer, she would ply her trade, goods laden to the brim on a small canoe from house to house selling everything such as fruits, veges etc, A sort of mobile convenient store on a small scale, and constantly on the move along the edge of the river searching for customers.

I'll wager she does a good business there, just glimpses into strangers' different way of lifestyle focusing on the subject of all the human activity and express the third world way of life without ever intruding on their privacy of course. She also has a sense of elegance imho, which seems to isolate her in the setting.

A quick 200mm shot and a tight crop I thought is immediately apparent that they are floating on water.

Not sure if the image says much, but I aimed to portray a specific aspect of life and scenario that may provoke some thought.......

The tight crop is good and yes, it is very apparent that we are on the water. Your eye is "right on!" Her hat and dress are fantastic and the neutral background of the wooden house is perfect.

giorno dopo giorno ci accompagni nella conoscenza di questa terra ancora in gran parte sconosciuta.
Anche oggi hai fatto centro con un bel ritratto della vita che si svolge sull'acqua e delle sue eleganti figure.
E'incredibile soprattutto notare la finezzadei costumio che queste donne indossano pur essdendo essi poco consoni all'ambiente nel quale si trovano.
Eccellente, come tuo solito, ogni dettaglio tecnico e sempre molto accurata la messa a fuoco e la nitidezza.
Complimenti per l'ennesima volta.

Good Evening Abmdsudi - The colourful clothes really pop out against the more subdued tones of the house and boat. I find these every day 'life on the water' shot exotic and fascinating and in their way quite romantic. I know though that the reality is not so easy! "business as usual" in this place looks so exotic to me. We sometimes have vans and motorbikes taking bread, fruit,vegetables or fish to neighbourhoods and the vendors call out to tell us what they've brought this time:) The scene you captured here is so peaceful but the vendor's glance gives it a lot of intensity. I like very much the brief but accurate and intriguing decsription of the setting. The two ladies stand out superbly against the dark tones of the ambience. Despite the open door and window, the interior of the house remains a total mystery. You've handled lighting and contrasts in a most effective way. Congratulations and thank you!

A rather ordinary snap-shot of some extraordinary people, from a western point of view. It's the ordinariness I like. There is nothing arranged, nobody posing, just a glimpse of real life, people working hard to make a living, a fascinating insight into the conditions of life in a place very far away from me. And a most impressive headgear, I might add.

Salam Abmdsudi.I remember from my uni days being told by my Indonesian friends that the most beautiful women in Indonesia were to be found in Kalimantan.I ca see why they thought this as these women are quite stunning and even with a slight frown, the one on the right is striking. Your thight crop give a rare glance in the every day lives of the local people indeed. That hat looks really practical to keep out the fierce sun. It is always good to see, that so many people can still live a traditional live far from our big cities rat race. I bet they are far more content with their life than we are.

I read with interes your informative note, not knowing the meaning of the big hat and red dress, she is looking at your lenses not sure if you are a posible customer, it seems to me

It is simple image but this says a lot about life of people from different parts of the world. To some especially in developed countries this scene looks romantic but for the people who live this kind of life it's a struggle. I like the low pov and it has good details with wonderful colors. What a different way to lead one's life: on the river. Or even always being at sea. This reminds me a little of how the people of Venice must live, although of course the way they deal with the water is very different. I love the colour, the tight framing and the reflections. A great shot, that makes one think about the different ways people eke out a living.

You're capturing well this place and scene by a good low angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle which the woman is selling them house to house loading fruits or vegetables on canoe. It's also impressive in her red dress and hat made of braided straw. And, you catch well the situation of seller and customer.

A good capture of a scene from daily life that is a record of a different culture to the one in which I live so it is interesting and informative.

I love the overall composition - the lady in reed does stand out but I like how she contrasts with the darkness around her.
