Photographer's Note

Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia, June 9, 2018

I spent three days in Lombok earlier this summer, about a month before the devastating earthquakes. Two of the days were spent on a rented scooter where I drove 400 km all over the island. I didn't even have to show my driver's license to rent it...

Off I went, starting in the far south. Driving up through remote country roads through the central parts. Then stopped to play couronne with some random people in a small village before I drove up to the national park through Rinjani. I enjoyed beautiful views before driving down the northern side. Drove most of the northern coast in the dark before I reached my hostel near the Gili Islands. It was in the pass between Pemenang and Mataram that I came across some tenths of monkeys. They were playing around and most people were feeding them. One of the monkeys grabbed an apple and sat down on my scooter. It left, and another monkey came to eat the crumbs. It left, and another monkey came to lick the juice that was left on my seat. Afterward, it stood up and borrowed my mirror to have a look at itself.

After this, I drove through Mataram, down to the ferry terminal and back to the south coast via country roads in the middle of nowhere.
